I want an A3 receiver to mount a scope on. Midway USA has a DPMS AR-15 Oracle A3 Flat-Top Upper Assembly 5.56x45mm NATO 1 in 9" Twist 16"Light Contour Barrel Chrome Moly Matte with GlacierGuard Handguard, Single Rail Gas Block, Flash Hider. For sale $414.99. What are your opinions , is DPMS products of reasonable quality? Should I look for other brands? My current upper assembly is a olympic arms with 20" barrel, A1 sights. I will be using lower receiver with A1 butt stock. Again what are opinions ,suggestions and thoughts. Thanks

You can do better than DPMS.

I would like to recommend doing better than DPMS.

man151, Midway USA also has a couple of Del-Ton complete uppers in stock for $420. With the DT upper you get an HPT/MPI bolt, in a properly assembled carrier group. Instead of DPMS all plastic "Glacier Guard" handguard the DT also includes a conventional handguard with aluminum heat shield inserts. DT typically has a higher overall build quality than DPMS as well. For the extra $5 I'd get the Del-Ton upper.

DPMS makes some decent stuff, and their barrels are typically very good. That being said, the Oracle is their budget model, so it doesn't have chrome lining, and it has the cheapo "Glacier Guard" hand guards. It would probably work just fine for casual plinking, but there are better uppers out there for just a little more money.

In my experience, DPMS has terrible quality control and I will never touch one again. I've experienced issues with more than one DPMS gun but the last one I handled had a completely misshapen bolt that appeared to have been chiseled by a caveman. There was no excuse for such a poorly made part. The gun the bolt came in failed to eject a single round and the bolt would bind when turned within the carrier by hand.

I just ordered an upper, BCG and CH from PSA; can't wait! I hear many good things about their stuff.

If you were looking at just a stripped upper, I'd say you might be alright, but then you can probably get other stripped uppers for a negligible price difference.

I say "might" because my DPMS upper needed a little knocked off the threads to get the barrel nut to align under proper torque. I don't know how I removed it the first time. I remember a lot of banging, another person, and a cheater bar. And yes, I was using a vise/action block.

Save yourself some trouble.

I quite enjoyed my PSA mid-length I put together with a built Lower and a Factory built Upper last Summer for around $725. It had decent accuracy and reliable thru 1,700 + rounds of brass and steel.

I'll go ahead and say it...

Anything is better than that Olympic you're sporting now. For the money, I'd go with del-ton or PSA. I'm a fan of an FSP as its attached to the barrel. Coupled with a handguard that allows the barrel to float.

My actual suggestions will be double what the DPMS will cost you.(or more)

If you're not worried too much and it'll just be a plinker and that's it, then by all means get whatever you want. I'd just make sure that a warranty is offered.
