OK, someone with hands on with either or both rifles. I'm looking at both and having a hard time making a choice. I'm not trying to start a 308 vs 223 debate, but it will mainly be used for groundhogs and target shooting. So any input or hot tips that would make me lean more towards one and not the other.

From a strictly logistical standpoint, I would go for the 223. From a reach out and touch standpoint the 308.

I think either way you will need to invest in some good glass to maximize the effectiveness of either platform. I would suggest one of the long range loopy scopes.

I would point toward the RRA as it come with a NM trigger, whereas the DPMS does not and you would incur extra costs.

Accuracy would be a toss, I was shooting a DPMS range gun with surplus ammo and 6x scope and getting a shade over an inch with a stock trigger!

Talk about apples and oranges...

First figure out what caliber would fit you better, and then make your choice.

For varmints and targets, .223 is the far better choice. You won't find too many varminthunters shooting .308's. You also won't find the .308's doing well against the .223's at Camp Perry.

Yeah, I know you don't want to start a caliber war, but the caliber is by far the biggest diference, here. This is like saying "Porsche 911 or Honda Odyssey? And lets not do the sports car v. minivan thing." ;)

Ground hogs and targets? .223, I should think. Unless you plan on shooting at really really long distances.
