Chinese NDM-86 (Dragunov) vs. DSA SA-58 FN-Fal
My girlfriend and I went to the range today to test out our favorite rifles. We went over to the Water & Wings club outside Philiadelphia where there is a nice 500 yard range.
She shot off her harris bipod and I shot from a rolled blanket. We both have four power scopes, hers is a 4x24 IOR with nato reticule and mine is the standard chinese POSP. We found that 4x scopes were quite adequate for the 500 yard distance(at silouette targets). The blast deflector on the fal makes it very loud, and greatly reduces felt-recoil. The longer barrel and flash hider on the dragunov reduced barrel-climb but causes more felt recoil than the fal. I think the dragunov reticule is better because you can rangefind by the height or width of the target. Hers seems to be a better precision reticule. Her trigger-pull is crisp and heavy while mine is light with a slight creep. She was able to make impressive follow-up shots even at 500yds, due to her bipod.
We both shot the same .308 australian surplus. At 500yds we got a 10-round 13-inch group out of the fal. There were also 2 called flyers but all were on the target. The dragunov shot an 11.5 inch 5-shot group. We have come to the conclusion that they have about the same accuracy. It was light wind and overcast today, about 40 degrees. On a nice summer day we willl try again with better ammo, and see what groups we get then.
The main advantage of the dragunov (in general) is the scope mount. I like to be able to slide it on and off easily. It is also more simplistic in parts and function. The fal is less expensive with a nicer finish. It also has higher capacity mags and cheaper spare parts. The fal is a better deal for the price, but they are both awesome rifles.
