Hello,
I'm not really all that knowledgable about these things. Where is the forcing cone exactly on a SG and what does it do? Just wondering about how a 28" or 30" vr Mossberg 500 barrel cut-down to 20" would perform with slugs and buckshot compared to IC choke of similar length. I know the ATF laws for shotguns is 18" measured from the breach face with a dowel, so no need for the inevitable warnings of impending night raids, weapons seizures and jail time.

thanks guys,

The forcing cone is the funnel between the chamber and the bore. It aids the transition of the shot and if made properly, distorts few pellets.

Usually, the longer the cone is and more gradual the taper, the better.

Long barrels have their place. Short Mossy barrels are neither costly nor rare. Best to not lop off your barrel.

A long cone mimics a bit of choke. A chokeless barrel with a long cone will shoot patterns close to an IC barrel with a short cone, all else equal.

HTH....
