I am aboout to refinish an old beat up marlin 336 lever 3030. Trying to decide color.

I just did a ruger 10/22 in duracoat gun blue color. I'm happy with it, but the color is not as dark as "gun blue". It has a much brighter blue color to it.

I was thinking about mixing duracoat gun blue 50/50 or 25/75 with semi-gloss black duracoat. Any ideas or experiences on how that would turn out. Other color suggestions for dura coat on a marlin 3030.

Duracoat will send you a color chip (for 2.85) but only of single color, they won't do mixes. I have googled around and not found much.

I have found that DuraCoat is good for some jobs. Mostly for syn-stocks and stuff. I don't use it on barrels and actions. If I want cheap quick cover-up - I use John Deere Muffler Black (actually a satin). If I want something more durable, but not bake-on requiring whole gun disassembly (CerraKote or KG Guncoat) I get a two part marine polyurethane. They are tough, can be flattened, and they can be tinted or mixed down to any shade you want. Same for some automotive finishes (that we can't get in Calif due to VOCs :().

As a good alternative - you can try Brownells Alumahyde - but I have never tried it in dark blue?

Duracoat

I tried the gun blue from duracoat but didn't really like it, to blue for me. You can mix any of the duracoat colors without any problem. I'm sure the gloss black mixed with gun blue would be interesting. I did use the gun blue gunkote and that was great and did look like bluing.

I did my mossberg with duracoat (gun blue) not long ago. I came to the same conclusion. If I had it to do over again, I would go 60% semi-gloss black, and 40% gun blue. As it turned out, regular gun blue looked great with my refinished wood stock set, so it will stay. I've used duracoat on several different firearms now, and have enough confidence in it to put on dang near anything. I have an SKS and a few mossbergs that have duracoat on both the receivers and barrels. There is no reason for me to believe that I will have any problems. The SKS is my test rifle for duracoat. After a few years of abusing it, the only parts that have scratches are where the takedown levers slide across the metal on the outside of the receiver.
