The EAA website says they are importing large capacity mags for the saiga rifles. I was under the impression the only reason the saigas could be imported was because they did not have hicaps available in the states. Can someone explain?

I thought that that was the case too. Hi caps would render it "unsuitable for sporting purposes." I would like to see hi caps, of course, but would not like them to end the importation of Saigas.

The loophole may be that these are not military magazines, the large capacity terminology they use to cut off import of certain rifles is the ability to accept "Large Capacity Military Magazines". Could be a loophole that no military uses the Saiga or it's mags as far as I know. So it's a large capacity mag, but not a military one. Beats me, sounds plausible at least, guess we'll see...

And I think Izhmash makes 30 round mags that they non-permenantly fix to only accept 10 rounds. Supposedly you can modify them back to 30 rnders pretty quickly/easily but I'm not sure...

Yes, there are are "10" rounders in a 30 rnd body... supposedly, you just remove a spacer... even have a 30 rnd spring.

The horse says they are on order.
That doesn't mean that Izhmash is going to actually make them but it will be great if they do.
I can't see them passing up a lucrative market like the U.S. because they don't have the goodies that the customers want so we can only hope,,,,,,,

Sorry if I missed something but what is the difference in the Saiga 7.62X39 magazines and the standard AK-47 magazines. I went to a gun shop today and the guy there said that it took standard double-stack AK mags, did he tell me wrong??? :(

Saigas have no feed ramp. The mags have a higher, wider front edge to act as a feed ramp instead. The mag catch is at a slightly differet height also. Marcus

if you put ak mag in stock saiga its questionalbly non sporting. thus could be violating 922(r) 10 or less imported parts. rifle would have more than 10 imported parts and would not be suitable for import thus illegal. some have made argument it would not be illegal because its not a banned rifle. but I asked them to write ATF for their take no reply ever came.

AK mags can work in saiga though requires 4/5 US mfg parts, feedramp or substitute with section of 1" pipe. file the mag catch lever.

All they really have to do is alter existing AK magazines or get a plant that makes AK magazines to add the "feedramp" to them. There is not law (anymore) against making "high capacity magazines" and since you are performing no alterations whatsoever to the rifle itself you arent violating 922 either.

The Saiga rifles are SPECIFICALLY named as being importable from Russia (as is the case with all arms imported from Russia). Unless the you alter the rifle into something other than what it started out as or the ATF changes its mind about its "sporting" status the rifle is legal.

What people used to do with their saigas was add a feedramp so that they could feed out of AK magazines (which lock up fine) THIS is an alteration of the rifle which means you have to make it a "domestically manufactured rifle" (via parts swapping) to make it legal. If you dont change the gun you should be fine.

$39 bucks for 223 and 7.62x39 $60 if you buy 2 at once 7.62x39 or 223, $45 for 20 round 308 magazines $70 if you buy 2 308 mags at once. might be able to buy bulk and get a good price doubt it would be as reasonable as regular AK mags though.
I think I will stick with my converted US parts setup mods for AK47 and AK74 mags with robarm follower for 223.

AK47 mags $6-9 bucks
AK74 mags $5-9 bucks

US parts conversion FCG+gas piston $60+$10 for feedramp or $1 for piece of pipe to build a feedramp.

can do more though price really starts to go up and do alot of the work yourself or it cost twice as much might as well go out buy the cheap AK of the month.
