Ear protection

This is my solution after trying muffs and rubber plugs on a string and cheap electronic muffs, these Howard Leight Impact Sports electronic muffs are the best <$50 option for hunting. Next best is rubber plugs on a string pre positioned in your ear but not sealing your canal, push in place when you see a deer. Your problem is your friend could shoot before you are ready and it takes motion & time to moove the muffs.

These are what I use:

They seem to work well, with the benefit of having a jack for external audio. My hunting buddy and I plug radios into our hearing protectors which allows us to communicate over distances and through woods when we can't see each other. On occasion we'll just click the mic button to get the others' attention and then use hand signals.

I've never seen anyone actually in the field using ear pro, that counts up a lot of big game and wing shooting seasons not to mention a lot of predator calling.
If I'm proned out on a prairie dog town or at the range I use, for hunting no.
My ears ring but it's more due to industrial exposure.

For those who have never seen anyone hunt using hearing protection, there I am fully protected. Notice how cumbersome hearing protection is.

I am 34 years old and I have noticeable hearing loss due to genetics and loud noises. I would get a GOOD set of active ear muffs/plugs. Be careful with your hearing as it does go without you even knowing it.

P.s. have a good time in the woods, the time spent waiting is the best part of the hunt.
