I can think of no better gift for Father's day than to spend the day doing man stuff with my son. 
Weather forecast is a bit wet for Sunday, so we decided to spend the better half of the weekend just enjoying the outdoors taking a hike by the river (and not catching any fish), and spending a couple hours shootin' at the range.
We brought the Ruger Mini-14 Ranch and SIG Sauer P320 X-Compact, our first time shooting both. I promised the teenager he could take the first shots with the Mini-14. Thankfully, our bench neighbors had put up the screen, because that thing has a very strong ejection. Fired some Federal American Eagle 55gr .223 and Hornady Frontier 55gr 5.56 and it ate them up. Accuracy was OK with iron sights at 100 yards, but man what a fun gun to shoot! Definitely the kid's favorite of the day as well.
Then we switched to the pistol range and put the first rounds through the X-Compact. Something about shooting outdoors that makes my trigger control go to pot even at only 10 yards, but I was able to settle it down after a bit. The gun puts the slugs right where you aim them. No stoppages, no malfunctions, just a smooth and comfortable little pistol. Part of the goal was to determine whether I would trust it as an EDC, and after today I have confidence it can fill that role.
The kid was having a bit of trouble with his grouping, so we worked on his stance and grip just a little, and his next three shots were smack through the center. Compared to our last time out together, his recoil management has improved considerably, and he actually got all his shots on target this time.
We finished up just chatting over some snack bar food. All in all just a terrific, relaxing day hanging with the offspring. I couldn't have asked for a better Father's Day gift.
