So, I've so far only reloaded with IMR 4895. I'm going to start reloading .223 and I've had a lot of recommendations for RL15, RE15, and R15. Is everyone talking about Alliant Reloader 15 or are there three different powders?

All three are the same powder. You will get a lot of advise on which powder is "Best" for the .223. That's because it is one of the least picky rounds to reload. I've had good accuracy with IMR-3031, IMR-4064, AA-2230, AA-2460,Win-748, Ramshot TAC, Re-10X, Re-15,Varget, and H335. My personal favorite is AA-2460 but YMMV. If I could only have one powder it would be IMR-4064. I can load everything I shoot from .223 to .30-06.
Re-15 would be a very close second. Good luck.

I`d play with your 4895 a bit before I jumped to other powders, especially with 55gr and lighter bullets..........just a hint.

Powder

:D what Joe said. I've been using IMR 4985 in my 223 for years. My gun likes 25.5 grains of 4895 behind a 52gr Hornday match bullet. The gun is a Remington 700VS heavy barrel. This load is not hot in my gun but be careful using someone elses loads.

Fair enough...I'll tool around with the IMR 4895 before trying the R15. Economy of scale is a good thing!

BL-C(2) is a little bit slow. It is more useful for I think 308 Win but works ok with heavier bullets. I've used it.. and with the light stuff can be a little flashy.

I'm presently working up loads for my 223 Contender using H4895 with 52gr Nosler Competition Match.
I'm finding H4895 to be a very versatile and accurate choice in several different rounds. I've had much better luck with it than Varget. I've had accuracy issues with Varget in my 22-250 and velocity disappointments with my 8mm Mauser. These are cartridges that should excel with Varget, but they do not live up to my expectations.

imr4985, h4895, or varget are my staples for .223 on up through 30/06. the reloader series are good, but i have got my loads down with the imr4895 and varget the best.

what's flashy?
yenchisks,
That's when a powder produces excessive muzzle flash.

IMO H335 is a great powder for loading the 5.56/.223 and Varget seems to be right up there too. Like said above, the .223 isn't very picky so there seems to be a lot of powders that will produce accurate .223 ammo.

What ArchAngelCD says.. also there were a few lots of WC846 (BLC-(2) Surplus) that were sold by a couple of the surplus sellers that were meant for igniting tracer ammo. Likely I got a batch of that stuff, so it appears more "flashy" than canister grade BL-C(2) likely would have. Basically slow powders pushing light bullets do not always completely burn in the barrel and you get excessive "muzzle flash" as the bullet exits the barrel. A good example in a revolver would be the old Blue Dot loaded with 125 or 110 gr bullets.. Lots of unburned and still burning powder as the bullet exits and a definite detriment to any night vision you may have had if firing this stuff in low light conditions.. Hence my term of "Flashy".
