Enfield No.2 MK I 38 S&W question

No, .38 S&W and .38 Special are two different breeds of cat and are not interchangable.
You can shoot .38 Special out of your Enfield if you like picking steel out of your teeth. These guns were made for the 38-200, which is the British nomenclature, 38 caliber , 200 grain bullet, except they later changed the military load to 38-180 ( yes, they did). The .38 S&W is the same shell with a lighter bullet. Back to the .38 Special, the 38 Special should not even fit into your cylinder, under no circumstances even consider shooting any thing but 38 S&W in your revolver.

Some British officers thought the .455 Webley was a bit stiff so they dumbed it down to the .38S&W. In doing so they stuck it to Webley and Scott and built the pistols at the Enfield armory. They either changed the internals or violated Webley's patents or both.
That didn't last and they eventually opened up production to commercial contractors because of demand during WWII.
The company that made beautiful sporting shotguns and the exceptional military revolvers cuminating in the Mark VI is no longer in business, the British government finally killed the company with their gun prohibition which started right after WWII. Note: There's still concrete works with American donated guns used as rebar in Britain.
That pistol is based on a Webley design. If you ever get a chance you'll want to try a Mark VI that's still in .455 Webley or been shaved to take .45ACP and moon clips. I've heard that .455 Webley with the proper bullets is very a accurate man stopper. With .45 ACP it's ok accuracy but I'll end up reloading using .45 autorim and the proper Webley style and measurement bulltets to get the best accuracy.

I actually had one for a couple years. Great gun, and fun to shoot. I had purchased 300 rounds of Remington from Outdoormarksman for a stupid low price of $9 per 50. Sorry, they no longer have any in stock. Magtech, Fiochi, and Miwall come to mind for the cheapest ammo. Of course, you can always reload it for pennies.
