How does the transfer of firearms from an estate to an individual work? Specifically, how do things need to be done if there is no specific provision in the will for the disposition of the firearms (handguns - the desire of the transfer from the deceased was made know verbally prior to death), the estate and intended recipients are in the same state but the executor of the will is from out of state?

My grandfather died and left a M1A secured by the trust he had created. The trustee handed the rifle to the beneficiary. All parties (grandfather, trustee & beneficiary) are residents of Indiana. NY is probably different.
