Hunter to pay $15,000 after grizzly shooting; probe continues

BOISE, Idaho A Kentucky bow hunter must pay 15-thousand dollars in restitution for shooting a protected grizzly bear in Idaho -- and then trying to cover up his crime.

46-year-old Dan Walters was also ordered not to hunt for two years after he pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor. Walters is from Dry Ridge.

The incident happened back in September of 2002.

Fish and Wildlife agents say Walters might have avoided the steep fine if he'd cooperated sooner.

Walters buried the arrow he used to shoot the bear.

The grizzly had been wearing a radio collar at the time it was shot, but the collar hasn't been recovered.

Walters was hunting with two friends when he shot what he thought was a black bear.
