I'm committed to the ACOG 3.5X for a main scope on the FAL but was considering an RMR or Aimpoint micro either riding alongside on the rail or on top, or putting the RMR on top of the ACOG both for unmagnified close-up shots. Any thoughts?

I actually have that same setup on my AR (TA11 with T1 in Larue offset mount).

First of all, I wouldn't recommend the TA11 for that purpose. The TA11 is a great general purpose do-it-all scope; but it is big and the few advantages the size offers are less appreciated if you have a red dot handy. I'm using the TA11 because that is what I had on hand.

If you are buying new, I'd take a look at the TA33 - 95% of what the TA11 offers; but in a much smaller package (3x).

As to the mount for the reddot, I prefer an offset mount. I discussed my setup more here:

wow that's really something to think about - a $250 difference for twice the field of view. The weight savings doesn't really matter to me but 3 vs. 3.5 doesn't matter much either and to save the money would be nice. I tried to get through the info in the link but I'm a little confused on the fit of a TA11 + another CQ red dot option... I don't have full length rails on the FAL I'm getting but i think I can have an additional section of rail added to accommodate a red dot... Do you think I need to do that for the aimpoint?

It depends on where your cheek weld is. I use nose-to-charging handle cheek weld on an AR15. With the longer eye relief on the TA11, this means I need to push the mount to the front of the receiver to have good eye relief, so there wasn't any room left on the receiver for the LT724 mount.

However, if I was interested in changing my cheek weld so that my head was further back on the stock, both the TA11 and LT724 would fit on the receiver just fine (with room for a flip up rear sight still).

Assuming that you don't place your nose right at the back of your FAL receiver (which does not seem to be as popular with .308s for some reason ;)) and that you have a rail that runs the length of the receiver, I don't think you would have any problem mounting both on the receiver.
