Hi all. So, after some research I have learned that the 870 Express is a "lesser" model 870, although mechanically the same as any other 870 and that "Magnum" does not mean much (Unless it is the super magnum that takes the 3.5" shells....)

Is all of that correct?

Is $275 a good price for the gun below? I hope so because I committed to buying it... and it is new, never fired.

Thanks for your input.

Is the barrel fully rifled or just rifle sights? If the barrel is rifled it's a good price if the gun is in good condition. If it's just rifle sights you should try to come down to the $225-250 range.

I am not sure yet. The gun is unfired, been cased. The story is he bought two, was going to convert one to a "tactical" HD gun and keep the other stock. This is the other.

New, they sell with a 26" or 28" ribbed barrel for around $275. This looks like a deer hunting setup, with the monte carlo stock and rifle sighted barrel (probably in fixed MOD choke).

It's probably an OK deal *if* you want a monte carlo stock and rifle sighted barrel. If not, you'll spend another $150 or so putting a regular barrel and regular stock back on it.

Well, the thing that drew me to the 870 over the Mossberg 500 is the cost of the barrels and accessories are a lot less with the 870... at least from what I found.

And, I do want a gun setup for deer, but I also plan to Turkey hunt so I also intend to put a pistol grip, and stock with recoil control so I can shoot the 3" turkey rounds a little more comfortably.

If it is new as the seller stated, then I will feel happy with the deal. But I do acknowledge I will need to put some money into it to get the most out of the platform.

You never can tell until you shoot them. THE most accurate smoothbore slug gun I have ever seen was a late '60s Wingmaster with a 28" modified choked barrel. Like a rifle out to 150 yards with a bead sight no less. The guy who owned it was quite proficient with it as you might imagine.

As others stated, if that gun has a rifled barrel on it, then Yes, it is a decent deal. You should be able to find a longer smooth bore barrel fairly easy to convert it to a bird or clay target gun. Around my neck of the woods, it's pretty common to find 870 express models in the pawn shops for around $200 or slightly less. After all, Walmart always has some in in stock, new for around $275 (with a 26 or 28" barrel).

Thanks guys... he just emailed me and said someone offered him $300... I said good deal, go for it.

Thanks for the advice!

Six months ago I picked up an unfired Express with rifled barrel and Remchoke barrel. Light rust which wiped right off. Put a saddle mount on it, variable scope and a pickup Remington synthetic thumbhole stock and forend. Total outlay, $375. (gun was 250)..BTW, barrels will interchange between wingmaster and express but not for the 20 gauge lightweights, within gauges. Don't know about the supermags. And yes, the express is a vastly cheapened Wingmaster. But still a good value.
