Fantastic News! ( Tennessee CCW reciprocity )

Related to the thread below about Memphis:

The state of Tennessee has just passed a new gun law making it legal for anyone of another state with a CCW permit or license to carry their handgun in Tenn. Read about it on packing.org under the Alabama news (the Al attorney gen worked with them on this). Go to the Alabama attorney gen. spot and scroll down to Tenn then you can download the Tenn new law. It will be in .pdf form so need Acrobat to read it, but it's only 3 pages including the signature page.
What Tennessee has done is recognize the fact (like Alabama) that honest gun owners had to fill out the 'yellow form' to buy a gun in their state which is checked on the Federal computer. And if you pass the yellow form exam and have a CCW permit, then you should be authorized to carry anywhere in the USA. I think this is the first state to really uphold the 2d Ammendment rights of all of us. A real slap in the face for "anti-gun Gore" who is from Tenn.
This means when I visit the Smokies or Nashville, etc. I can now carry my handgun legally. It will be a big boost for tourist trade in Tennessee. (Of course, you can't carry in DollyWood.)
Now all we need is for Texas, Louisiana, etc. to follow suit. Those of you in Texas need to e-mail your state rep's and mention the Tenn. new law.
Glory Hallelujah!

Fortunatly, my home state of Indiana will recognize anyone's permit and have done so for years.

Texas, on the other hand, won't reciprocate unless the other state has permit qualificatons at least as stringent as Texas'. Since Indiana has no training class, Texas declined to reciprocate with Indiana even though Indiana recognizes theirs. :(

You got to get Tennesee's attorney general to have a little chat with the Texas AG if the requirements for permits are similar.

Vermont doesn't require two rituals of passage and a .gov permission slip. ;)

I'm not sure about the marriage license. A friend of mine claims he has a "regional license", not valid when he is out of town on business.

Alaska no longer requires a permit for concealed carry, and it recognizes any and all permits issued in other states, counties and cities.

To top it off; Alaska still issues CCW permits and is aggressive in getting reciprocal arrangements with other states. In other words, it will issue permits to those who want them, just so Alaskans can carry when traveling outside of the state.

It doesn't get any better than that! Vermont is now second best - if you live in Vermont you can never carry outside of the state because there is no real permit system for other states to recognize.

alaska recognizes ccw's from ALL other states, and starting next month, it will be legal to carry concealed WITHOUT the permit. we werent the first state to recognize everyones permit though. i forget who was. so maybe tennessee is like 3rd or 4th.
:D i'm sure its number one to tennesseeans though. but now i have one more state i know i can visit without being disarmed.

edit - damn you keith! making me look like a johnny come lately!

old, great news indeed. The gun owners of the Land of Orange must be recognized for their hard work which benefits us all.

old, FYI--Indiana has recognized the licenses of all other states and foreign countries for decades.

Cats, no, has nothing to do with training. When I was pushing Tejas/Indiana reciprocity (Indiana's Attorney General is on board, but I could not get Tejas to budge), Tim Colvin at the Department of Public Safety in Austinacious advised that he would not allow reciprocity since Indiana recognized all other states and foreign countries. He stated that anyone from any other nation could then carry in Tejas since Indiana recognized them.

I know, I know it makes no sense how Indiana law would control what Tejas does. Indiana's regiments left Austin over 100 years ago.

Anywho, one thing the law likes is a pattern. Lets hope this trend continues!:)

Right. Because we all know how many other nations out there have liberalized laws regarding carrying a handgun.

Sounds to me like he was grasping at straws.

it's about time citizens stop recognizing government's supposed right to make us get a permit to carry our firearms

This sort of idiocy is why starting in Sept. the AG's office will be making recip calls instead of the DPS guys. New law and about time.

El T,

I heard it was the training class, but I'll take your word for it. Figures that it would be those midnight movements accross the border that would force me to have to get a TX CHL - which I still haven't recieved yet because they rejected my fingerprint cards. This buys them another 30 days. Grumble, grumble...

Oldgranpa, question is.....

when is Alabama going to recognize Tennessee's carry permit?

Bainx,
read the stuff at

www.packing.org

under Headline News for Friday, August 1, 2003. Scoll down to the ALAG.....topic, clik on the Attorney General topic which gives all states with recip with Alabama. Tenn. is recognized, that is what all the excitement is about, from my standpoint at least. I'm sorry I don't know-it-all like some and didn't know other states already do this too. But never the less it is always good news when another state has CCW for everyone with a permit or license.
By the way, download the new Tennessee law, it is really interesting reading, only 2 pages. The last line says: "This act shall take effect July 1, 2003,the public welfare requiring it." Signed July 31, so it just went into effect.
Now, I can go to Miss, Ga, Fla, Tenn, all around me with my CCW.

OG--
by golly, that is good news! Thanks for the links and now.....for North Carolina............
