I just read some place that 18" barrels are OK because of the availability of fast burning powder in the ammo. I am looking at a 18" DPMS 308 that I would shoot up to 175 grain bullets from. Does anyone know of 308/7.62 ammo that specifies it uses fast burning powder, or knows the powder ID so I could use it in reloads?

Fast burning powders for shorter than average barrels are an urban legend. The same powder you use in your 22" M1A and your 20" Remington patrol car trunk gun will work as well for an 18" DPMS. I saw a guy shoot 1000 yards with one and standard Black Hills Match ammo, no problems... until he started reloading and somebody told him to neck size which did not work AT ALL in his automatic.

Jim:

True, true. DPMSs have match chambers, even in the AP4 model. A FL resize is needed.

Gas systems on the shorty gas guns are regulated for standard burn rate powder & off-the-shelf factory ammo.

There is nothing to be gained, and lots to lose, by playing with faster then normal powder in a gas operated action.

Look at a Hornady reloading manual for data.
It has a chapter specifically devoted to gas-operated 7.62 NATO loads.
