I got a ton of nice .40S&W Federal cases that are tumbling now but I just noticed they have the NT stamp. I haven't seen the .40 S&W in a "NT" version. Are these crimped? Thanks!

You should be able to tell by looking at them. The will be a little ring depressed into the case around the primer that fills in the "rounded" base of the primer.

When you decap the primer comes out with only a bit more force but this ring opens up unevenly and later interferes with seating a new primer. If they are crimped, I'd toss 'em, normal .40 S&W brass is too easy to pick up off the ground to mess with swagging or reaming the crimp. If it was 10mm or 44 mag brass it'd be a different story :)

Yep, Wally. That's exactly what they look like. I've never seen a handgun round with a crimp before (at least the ones I shoot)... and I've shot a lot and picked up a lot. Only thing I've found like this is S&B and they are just tight, not crimped from what I've been told.

The S&B I've used do look crimped at first because of the ring of red sealant around the primer, but they are not crimped. The flash holes may be a tad on the small sized as a fair number of folks report problems decapping them, but never gave me any trouble.

Like I said I'd toss them as .40S&W brass is nothing special or hard to find. Maybe decap a few and try to prime to be sure and know from experience why they are more trouble then they are worth for such easy to find brass.

Its actually not hard to deal with the crimp its just an extra tool and handling step. The separate swaging tools are IMHO not worth buying for only a few hundred rounds, and the manual reamers are cheap but tedious for more than a few cases.

I have some of those. Mine are not crimped. The NT stands for Non-Toxic(lead free) as far as I know.

Sell them for scrap, Winchester also makes some of this stuff for lack of a better word. It is a pain, I find some from time to time, makes you check em before putting them thru the Dillon

The WIn NT cases are not crimped, the problem with them is the IDIOTS at winchester used small primers in their NT .45ACP! A pox on Winchester for doing this!

When one slips thru into my Dillon I usually notice right off when the primer won't seat, I then continue and remove it before charging the case. My XL650 handles the unused primer very nicely dropping it down a chute for recycling. You can load them with small pistol primers if you are desperate.

Fed NT Brass

Dont know about the 40, but the 9mm is crimped, so into the scrap pail it go.

As an official brass scrounger I will find it hard to part with such fine quality brass. Who knows maybe someday I'll swage it with my RCBS die that's on it's way to me. I have some .223 that's crimped. Don't reload that yet but one's gotta be prepared! :D

My 650 will not seat a primer in a Federal NT case I have detonated a primer when one got past me.It is very loud and will make you crap your pants when a primer goes off that close to your ear(I know I should wear hearing protection but I don't).I put the NT into the recycle bucket.Ken
