I found this article and to me it screams that we can save a lot of money buy simply allowing some restricted hunting in this area. I would imagine that you could auction tags in this area and end up with quite a load of cash. Heck if they really wanted to they could even make it a requirement that participants have a past history of having a hunting license without any game violations.

Sharpshooters to Thin Catoctin Mountain Park deer herd

December 8, 2010 - 9:57am
by From Staff Reports @ The Frederick News-Post
Portions of Catoctin Mountain Park will be closed weekdays starting Monday to allow for a deer hunt. ...

Sharpshooters hired by the park will kill the deer because public hunting is not allowed within its 5,770 acres. ...

One of the state parks here has started letting a select few hunt (maybe 40? picked by the alabama bowhunters association), to thin the deer herd because of increasing numbers. They have actually been doing it for the past three years and finally have got a good system down on how to do it.

But after the first season wasn't successful, they brought in the sharpshooters once and it was very expensive on them...

This is all bowhunting only.

"public hunting is not allowed within its 5,770 acres. ... " --because there's a bunker for special people that need to flee DC when the SHTF. So sad its a great area, and great camping as well-

The Federal or State sharpshooters thing is a scam, in my opinion. Where does one apply for that job, anyway? What grade level is it? I believe the "sharpshooters" are DNR or BLM or some wildlife program personnel that just like to shoot a lot of game. Who wouldn't? The real deer control sharpshooters like are used in my area for metro districts that have too many deer, are verifiable companies that shoot at night, over bait, with silencers. Just my opinion, thanks.

Fort Yargo State Park here in Georgia handles this the right way. When the deer herd got too large they raffled off the chance for hunters to come in and fill their tags. The first year they let around 50 hunters come in from friday to sunday with the park closed. They had a goal of 120 deer or so and took maybe 60-70. So not bad but the next year they shut down the park for 2 weekends raffled off more spots for each weekend and the quota was 200 or so. Last I heard it has been pretty succesful.

I wonder if these sharpshooters at least donate the meat or something.
