I've done some research and I'm looking for some additional feedback on how usable the old JC Higgins semi auto shotguns are. I know they were built by High Standard and the parts are interechangable. I just picked up (well, won it, but can't pick it up until later this week - IL waiting period stuff) a pre-serial number JC Higgins Model 60 semi auto shotgun. Based on what I've found on internet searches, the model that I have is the same as the High Standard Supermatic Trophy, with the adjustable choke and built in compensator. The gun LOOKS to be in great shape (see photo). I just wonder if this is a gun that I can actually use and shoot, or if it's going to be nothing but problems. Anyone have any feedback? Thanks in advance!

Here's the auction photo.....I didn't even look at this gun when I did the auction preview....the only reason I bid on it was because it went so cheaply!
Out the door price including buyer's premium was $108.

My model 20 pump looks just like yours with a few exceptions.

The internals are almost the same with the differences being the gas piston system working the action arm to cycle the gun.

I'm not too well informed about the reliability of the gas gun (or recoil operated if that applies, but I doubt it) so I'm sure that that shotgun is very usable. I would check it over well and make sure it is clean of old dried lubricant.

Most times a gun has a malfunction is due to lube getting gummed up in the internal working parts.

I think these shotguns are very well made and by the way that gun looks , it should give you as good service as some newer guns on the market.

Lot's of machining on that gun and attention to detail that seems to be lacking in gun making today.

I love my Model 20 because it's slick ,tight and solid and pulls up nice to my shoulder.

You have a nice one there. Nice find!:)

Not to forget, Numrich gunparts may have parts for your gun if needed.

Yeah...I know that the High Standard pump guns have a pretty good reputation. I am hoping to hear from someone that had either good or bad experiences with the semi autos. You're right, this one does LOOK nice....I hope it functions as well as it looks.

I have one...Barely looks fired. The Bluing is outstanding on it and even though it weighs a lot, it feels perfectly solid.

Your 'new' gun is a basic solid no frills workhorse. I owned two or three many moons ago.

I see no reason it will not give good safe service. Just clean it thoroughly before putting it into service.

Thanks guys.......I don't know when I'll have a chance to try firing it....but I hope it all works and functions properly. How difficult are they to take apart and clean?

Thanks again,

Warner

I have a Model 20 pump gun. It was my grandpa's gun. He used it for shooting matches and hunting. He had others that used for the same purpose but this one was one of his favorites. I love the gun. I had planned on shortening the stock but later decided against it. Now I need to find a recoil pad to replace the one I lost. If the Model 60 is anything like my Model 20 you should enjoy it.
