FEMA Reconsiders Gun Ban at Trailer Park

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Amid complaints from gun-rights groups, FEMA said Wednesday it is reconsidering a ban on firearms at emergency housing parks built in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

"We've got attorneys who are looking at that as we speak and they're trying to figure out who wrote the rules, what the intent was," FEMA spokesman Butch Kinerney said.

The dispute arose at a nearly 600-trailer encampment that opened last week near Baton Rouge. Katrina evacuees will be allowed to stay there rent-free while they try to find permanent housing. Similar encampments are scattered across the hurricane zone, but this was the first big one to open.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said it has been general policy at FEMA for several years to prohibit guns at such parks anywhere in the country.

But the National Rifle Association threatened to sue, and another gun rights group, the Second Amendment Foundation, said it, too, was looking at legal action.

"Whether it's a national disaster, whether it's by nature like Katrina, or a flu pandemic or an earthquake, the Constitution can't be thrown out the window," said NRA leader Wayne LaPierre.

He said the NRA was outraged, and he warned that the organization would take its case all the way to Congress and president.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office had asked that guns be banned at the encampment because the trailers are close together and have thin walls, according to spokesman Deputy Fred Raiford.

"If a gun was discharged in any of those trailers, it probably would go through three or four other trailers before it stopped," Raiford said.

But FEMA spokesman James McIntyre said guns would have been prohibited even without the Sheriff's Office request.

Seriously--if you were running a concentration camp, would you allow guns? :scrutiny:

Like anyone should be surprised at this. It's what happens when you give the government the ability to override their own constitution. :banghead:

Hmmm...first the NOLA issue, now this. Maybe the NRA has woken up, smelled the coffee and grown a spine at last. Have to keep an eye on them, see if they continue in this vein. If they do, I'll have to rejoin 'em and tell 'em why.

As it would through most of the housing put up in the country in the past 30 years or so. Nobody is clamoring for gun bans in all the suburbs. Yet.

George III is laughing himself silly in his grave.

HUUMMMMMMM has been the policy for several years. Wonder how we can find out what year this policy started? Inquiring minds want to know.

Dude I have never been anti-NRA. I only get annoyed at them (indeed at anyone) who passes up easy opportunities to do the right thing. I would rather our lobbyists got their feelings hurt than they think that we are pleased with them taking the easy way out of a situation that demands a confrontation.

In the past, the NRA has been pretty limp-wristed in terms of pursuing a pro-gun agenda. Lately they have been quite badassed. The GOA seems to be letting the side down, so I criticize them now.

For once I hope that's just spin. I mean, they think people who own guns shoot the TV when the remote goes missing?

I've known some people who might shoot the TV when kerry or some goverment nutjob gets on the tv and preaches how evil guns are :D

As for loosing the remote. Rednecks just get a logn stick and poke the button's. If it is old fasioned with nob's we cut a grove into it.

Iam also glad the NRA is doing something.

My remote is voice type. Woman change the channel NOW! Of course I have found this model to wear out in about 2 years and then disappears. But seems to be plenty around and easy to pick up another.

Oddly enough if that form of remote and you formally join services before the remote is lost.

it is likly to take the tv and most of the rest of the stuff in the house with it

GOA doesn't have the resources NRA does; GOA cannot be everywhere filing lawsuits. As a lawyer, I can assure you that lawyers don't come cheap! :uhoh:

Lawsuits in the South over gun rights

Are going to go in the Gun Rights favor. Our favor. These judjes live here where everyone who lives in the country has rifles and shotguns.
Every third or fourth person in town owns Longarms.

These elected or more likely re-elected judjes should be the base pool for SCotUS judjes.

That's what I'm hoping. And why after many years, I finally joined the NRA.

Keep up the good work. :D
