I am considering applying for my FFL. I'd like to start by facilitating transfers, and work up to a small inventory sold on gunsamerica and similar sites. As such, I am looking at a home-based business. Zoning and local laws look good, so I'm not worried about getting it. My questions for the FFL holders among us are more on logistics of setting up my premises.

How do I separate my personally owned firearms from the business owned guns? I'm imagining a completely separated storage area - are there other rules that I need to follow beyond that?

What about purchasing other guns for my personal collection? My plan is to operate as a business, but I will want the occasional new toy for me - do I just sell it to myself?

What other logistics do I need to be considering?

Thanks!

This is actually a fairly common question here. A quick search will yield quite a bit of information on the requirements for becoming an FFL. We have a few dealers on here, and two in particular (Bubbles and Dogtown Tom) have written up walk-throughs of the process to becoming a dealer.

Good luck, and happy reading!

ATF regulations require that any personal firearms be tagged "Personal Not For Sale" or stored separately and the storage area/safe/room marked as such. The reason is that ATF doesn't like to find guns on your premises that aren't recorded in your bound book. (that would be real bad) Brownells actually sells little tags already printed....but it's cheaper to make your own.

If you are a sole proprietor the gun is "yours" the minute it arrives at your premises....you just log it into your bound book and show a disposition out to yourself. It is a good idea to always log it back into your inventory before selling and have the customer complete a 4473 and NICS. ATF wouldn't like seeing you acquire guns on your license only to "disappear". If your business is incorporated you would need to complete a 4473 and pass a NICS check before acquiring the gun for your personal use.

You will find that answer and many others after LOTS of reading....on this site and the FFL forum at AR15.com:D

Thanks for the pointer to AR15.com, and the answers! I tried searching, but FFL turns up too many threads, and I was having a hard time coming up with a good combo of terms. I spent the last hour reading through ar15.com threads, and have more to go...

I palyed with the same idea and I was told that ATF would NOT let you use any part of a private residece for your business is this true or just Jib Jab? Thanks!

look in the armory section on Ar15.com then go to the bottom to the FFL section
