For 100 to 200+ range use (a few hours once a month or so) I've narrowed it down to a Tikka Whitetail Hunter or a Savage 10FP (.308) and a Nikon Monarch 6x42. Leaning towards the Tikka for the smoothness of operation and the better attention to detail although the Savage has that pristine barrel. Thoughts?

Thanks. Looks like the Tikka Whitetail Hunter and a Kahles 6x42 7A.

I'm gonna post even though I can't help you.

I've never shot a Tikka.

But I really like Savage. I think they get a bum rap. For the money they are the best bargain out there (that I've tried).
I have several and like them all. I'd like to hear what other have to say about the Tikka that have actually shot one.

The most intrinsically accurate rifle that I have ever shot was a Tikka in .22-250. That's all I know.

Had a Savage in 7mm Rem. Mag. Sold it. It was accurate enough for my small talent, but the gun and the caliber just didn't "do it" for me. JMO

If looks and fit/finish are important for you (they are for me), get the Tikka.

If you like to work on your rifles or expect to, get the Savage.

They both are very accurate out of the box. If cost is your consideration get the Savage.

If accuracy is your only criteria, they both rock, but the Savage can be tweaked more by more gunsmiths I'd think.

Me? I'd go Tikka unless it's for a tactical project rifle, then I'd go Savage.

I just recently got a NIB Tikka WH syn. .308, trigger, stock and glass like bolt action is much better than Savage. It does have a plastic trigger guard and a (plastic) synthetic magazine, which are expensive for spares. Rifle is shooting near 1 MOA with 147 gr. surplus Port. ammo and it was kind of windy. 150 gr. factory ammo slightly sub MOA, again it was windy, I think I can do better. I think the Tikka offers alot of features and accuracy for the price and it does it in a sporter weight rifle. Mine has a Burris Fullfield II bplex 3-9. I plan to use it coyote calling this weekend.
Now I am interested in a T3 as a comparison.

I've owned several of both. I currently own three Tikkas and no Savages. The Tikka has far better fit and finish, a much better trigger, smoother action, and I've found them to be more accurate. Tikka won't let a rifle out of the factory unless it will shoot a one inch group at 100 yards.

Savage makes a good gun for the money, but they aren't in the Tikka class.
