I don't have a scanner so I just took a picture of the picture of the turkey I got this season. The picture was already bad because my wife was overseas with our digital so I was using a disposable camera.

This turkey was a young tom. Probably JUST old enough to no longer be called a jake. Sucker was heavy... I don't know how heavy it was as I didn't have a scale available. The 4-wheeler that I have it laid across in the pic is a Kawasaki Prairie 300, which is a pretty good-sized 4-wheeler. Today I pulled out the breasts, which probably weighed a good 3 to 4 lbs alone, and cut some up for jerky and my wife and I had the rest as fried strips. They were tasty. I'm cooking the jerky tomorrow so we'll see how that turns out.

Now here's the story.

I got this turkey not long after sun-up one April morning on our land outside of Bastrop. I was using a standard slate call and wood striker. I could hear them gobbling across the fence in the next guy's land. I started hitting the slate and they immediately responded. I could hear some gobbling coming closer so I kept hitting it. Well, I didn't realize how close this first one had gotten because he'd stopped gobbling for a while and all of a sudden he came out into the clearing. Well, I still had my gun slung over my back because I hadn't realized how close he was. So when I thought he wasn't looking (who was I kidding...they're ALWAYS looking) I tried to unsling my 870 Express real fast but he immediately took off and I took a desperation shot that was too far and he disappeared. Well this was my last day hunting and I wasn't ABOUT to go home turkeyless with all the gobblin' I was hearing. So I moved about 50 yards, got into some brush and started hitting that slate again. I heard some gobbles and then didn't hear them for a really long time but then all of a sudden Tom comes struttin' in, head aflame with color, tail feathers spread out.... I knew this was a good one and this time I was ready with my gun cradled in the crooks of my arms. I let him come a bit closer and then I whipped up my 870, put that bead right on his head and shot at about 30 yards. He went right down and floundered around for a bit and died. It was a good kill with no shot in the meat. Yee haw! The beard was unusually short though for a Tom...only about 2.5 to 3 inches. The tail feathers were full and all the same length though.

It's too bad there's a limit of one here. :(

The fiurst time I saw how big a wild turkey was... I went home and got bigger shells.

Nothing wrong with that bird.

Gonna be a good eater though!

Thats one more turkey than I got in the last 4 years.

But, Im gonna put in for the spring draw here.

Wish me luck!

Oh it was, it was! The jerky got a bit overcooked because apparently it cooked much faster than any of the recipes said it would, but it's still edible and not bad.

The fried turkey fingers were excellent.

Good luck on that draw. I'm really glad we don't have to draw for licenses here!
