Being third generation English American, a Lee Enfield Rifle was naturaly my first choice for my first centre-fire rifle.
Living in Alaska at the time, was an excuse to finally buy one. Found a chopped-up "sporter" 1942 Savage No.4 Mk.I* at a shop in Anchorage for $100. Bought it, then ordered a stock set from Gun Parts Corp. and it looks like it should have back in 1942.
Two years ago I finally got a No.1 Mk.III. This one was made by Birmingham Small Arms and assembled in 1940. I say "assembled" because the action body has the slot for the magazine cut-off, which according to what I have heard was stopped in 1939 when the War started. The date is stamped at different times, the "19" was stamped first then the "40" was stamped later, hard to describe, I'll try for a photo.
Anyway, this rifle was FTR'd in India post independence, which I think was 1947? It has an Indian made barrel installed. I'd love to know which regiment had this rifle first? The 1st Bn. of the Somerset Light Infantry was in India when the War started and fought in Burma, and was the last last regiment to leave India after indepence. I say this because my Dad's family is from Somerset, I would love to find that this rifle served with the Somersets...LOL, it really does not matter...LOL.
I got this rifle in a chopped condition also, and restocked it. I have not fired this one as of yet. I have .303" Mk.VII Cartridges, just living in Toledo, Ohio, there is no where to fire it at...LOL. I miss Alaska...LOL. I'll try for photo soon.
Thanks
Mark
