I finally got to shoot my new S&W 646. It's a S&W Performance Center .40 cal. L-Frame 6-shot revolver, 3 7/8" barrel with titatinum cylinder, and uses full moon-clips.
I already had a N-Frame S&W 610 in 10mm, and this is sort of like a "mini" 610, though an L-frame isn't a tiny revolver by any means. While the 610 goes around 50 oz. the 646 weighs around 34 oz.
The trigger was smooth in both DA and SA mode. And though I didn't do any bench-rest shooting, the gun seemed to be very accurate. Recoil was mild, and rapid shooting wasn't difficult nor punishing.
The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the moonclips. Compared to the moon-clips for the 610, the 646's seem thin and somwhat fragile. Plus there's actuall two thicknesses available depending on the cases used. They also cost around $3.50 each, more if you get them directly from S&W. But they loaded okay, loaded and extracted well, so I guess it's just a question on how they hold up. (The Rimz version aren't offered yet, but I was told they are in the works, and may be available at the end of July.)
I bought the gun from a seller on Gunbroker.com for $550 (with s/h). It's NIB, and came with 7 moon-clips and de-mooner, plus the alminum PC case. So I think I did well for my money. There was another 646 being auctioned off, from a different seller, if anyone is interested.
After more break-in shooting, I plan to change the sights and maybe the grips, though the grip seem to fit my hand pretty well. My plan was to make this my IDPA gun, but I may just start carrying it CCW at least part time.
I knew I'd be please with the gun (I'm pleased with every gun I buy) but this one is really a gem.
