There was a thread, I think on THR, months back by someone who had gone through a defensive shooting. He described the aftermath, with having to leave his house, and all of the other miseries. It was a horrible story.

I've been trying to find it, as a friend of mine doesn't believe we need legislation to protect those involved in self-defense shootings. I've been searching for that thread or a link to it, but can't find it.

Does anyone recall if the story was here on THR and, if so, when?

Thanks for any replies.

What type of legislation would you like to see? Yes, some suffer unfair hardships but we do need a legal sysem to ensure self defense shootings are in fact self defense shootings.

I like the idea of the castle doctrine laws that protect the victim from being sued in civil court if they aren't found criminally responsible. If the bad guy's family decided to sue, regardless of whether you win or lose in court you will probably be financially ruined defending yourself.

No, it wasn't a high profile shooting. This was a guy relating what happened to him after he shot a bad guy. He had to move out of his house but still pay the mortgage, get another job...all sorts of horrible things happened because of the shooting.

I just wanted to impress upon a friend the fact that shooting someone isn't a walk in the park, even if the DA says it's self defense.

I think I remember. There was a link to it posted here. The aftermath wasn't bad b/c of the laws or political situation, it was b/c the guy ended up shooting a gang member so he and his family were targeted.

I know it was posted both here and ARFCOM, I'll see if I can dig it up.

ETA: I found one, not sure if it's the one the OP meant, but still an incredibly good read about how badly your life can get screwed up in an instant:

Thanks, Bubbles. I'm sure that's the story, but there's a longer version somewhere.

This will get the point across, though. Too many people carrying think that the aftermath of a shooting will be just an inconvenience.
