Geoff, I recently went boar hunting

My rifle was a .308 with 175 grain CoreLok ammo.

My sidearm was a Ruger blackhawk in .45 colt with Buffalo Bore ammo in it.

I got the boar with the .308 the sidearm never came out of the holster.

Good Luck hunting.

Went on the hunt last weekend but unfortunately didn't even see any. We saw plenty of signs but never did track them down. Ended up going with my 12 gauge and 3in Slugs with an Improved Cylinder Choke. Had Federal 240 grain hollow points in my S&W 629 .44 since thats all I had and I couldn't find an suggested .44 ammo anywhere in this town. Figured the hollow points were better then nothing as a back up. Too bad I didn't get to try any of them out. Oh well, better luck next time! Thanks again for all the tips and suggestions!

Shotguns for hogs is a bad idea here, they get over 700 lbs in my neck of the woods, just imagine buckshot or slugs hitting that hide/scar tissue. I have heard countless stories of hogs being killed and old buckshot is found just under the hide or loged in it. These are tough customers especaly the larger boars, and nothing out of a shotgun penatrates enough for my likeing on them. A 30-30 with a good fusion/corelock will knock a hole through his vitals and is much more handi in the brush, same with a Saiga loaded with 150gr spire points. If you have to use your shotgun I would get the hardest heaviest slug I could find to ensure penatration to the vitals. Your 44 mag is an exellent backup just don't buy CXP2 grade hollow points for hogs if you think you might see a large one. Some people use hard cast bullets in 44s others like heavy controled expansion bullets either one should work just fine for you.
