Firearms Special on MSNBC "Behind the Trigger"

I also see a recognition of biased media "stories" like this driving anti-RKBA legislation. If we cannot discuss that here...the Antis have already won.

no kidding. When liberals are polled even they admit that the media is biased. I'm a scientist which means I'm surrounded by many liberals.. many of which own guns and they are completely clueless because the only thing they know is MSNBC.

We need to get the NRA (with it's deep pockets) to push back with something similar to this video made by Jews for the Preservation of Firearms:

The video impressed me enough that I just became a member. I'm just glad you don't have to be a Jew to join.

I'm impressed too. I'll be keeping on eye on those guys. I may have to become a life member. I don't do the regular membership stuff. I'm all in or nothing.

The show "Armed in America" is on tonight at 10pm EST - MSNBC apparently just broadcast it between 5pm - 6pm EST, but I only caught the last couple of minutes. Doesn't look good from what I saw...

From what I saw it was pure horse manure. Comments like, "According to current law any weapon that is 50 cal or smaller is classified as having a sporting purpose. That means anybody can buy this 50 cal Barrett." Then they went to a shooting range where Al Roker said he was going to fire a few weapons that these criminals have. He was shooting it in full auto. Obviously this is a tactic used to scare uneducated people into supporting whatever new anti-second amendment law is on the table.

i watched wasn't so bad.
one quote was during a gunshow film clip "while the vast majority of these guns are used safely when one goes afoul the results are often tragic"

I didn't think the bit was so bad. One guy (I can't remember) made the best comment of the night. He said something like, "we can work on fighting gun crime with laws that are currently on the books." You have to listen carefully because MSNBC didn't highlight the comment.

Overall, I didn't see the piece as being overtly anti-gun. I think MSNBC was legitimately trying to present the issues related to gun violence. I thought the main point MSNBC was trying to get across was that law enforcement needs to find ways to prevent guns from getting into the hands of criminals. I agree. I didn't find MSNBC to be outright suggesting we need more gun laws, but rather focusing more on the enforcement of current laws.

I wish MSNBC would have highlighted the idea of more guns in the hands of law abiding citizens as being a good thing. Unfortunately, the last bit covering that 4-day stand-off in Missouri directly countered such a concept.

Oh, also, the bit was kind of like a propaganda piece for the BATFE. Based on what I've read about the BATFE, I consider the BATFE as being more detrimental than good.

It was about like Al doing the weather....taken with a grain of salt.
Mostly it was bland and boring. There were a few things that stood out: (1) The one guy referred to the Barrett as a ".50 Browning machine gun". We know he was talking about the cartridge, but that isn't how he put it. And most folks would tune out thinking you can buy a .50 Browning machine gun as easy as a .22 rifle. (2) Why have Roker shoot a Thompson? Do many gangbangers use Thompsons these days? (3) The end segment was not good and rather pointless. (4) I laughed when the guy said the KelTec .223 pistol could kill a man at 300 yards....uh huh....if you clamped it in a vise.
The whole show was waaaaay too BATF oriented.
However, I thought the straw purchase segment was done rather well.

Garbage, complete garbage.

It isn't so much that there wasn't anything factual or redeeming about the program, it is the way things are presented that drove me nuts.

Most of the items, guns, and facts were for the most part truthful, but with the jaundiced view that the media always takes in regards to guns.

For instance:

1. When Al is shooting guns found on the street. He's firing a full auto Thompson and can anyone tell me the last time that particular type of gun was used on the streets to commit crime? Probably Bonnie and Clyde don't you think?

2. Al's limp wristed attempt at holding the Glock 9mm was hilarious. What a pansie. Did you notice how the close up of the camera was of the gun in slow motion and then Al talking about how powerful the gun is to hold? Ridiculous. I would love to have seen his soft hands holding a .454 Casull or a .500 S&W.

3. When they present the .50 cal, they actually equate the purchase of it to a .22 long rifle. Saying there is no difference. Right, other than several thousand dollars and about $10 per bullet.

4. At the end when they are discussing the ATF's bullet database and how they swiftly, with no explanation, show the NRA, while explaining how the amendment (Tiahart, which is not mentioned by name), keeps them from getting more guns off the street. Total misrepresentation of what that amendment does, as well as not giving even 5 seconds as to the protections it provides, or those that support it.

5. They spend 2 segments talking about the problem in New Orleans and the gangs, drugs, and guns. When they do the BIG HUGE bust, they recover exactly 2 guns. Lame and they play up the drug part. Nice coverage.

There were a few more items, but I'd have to watch that crap again.

Overall, it is what I expected from an outfit like MSNBC. When it comes to guns, most of the media is just as bad, if not worse.

What I saw was an indictment of a poor legal system, a poor law enforcment system, and a hip-hop culture of young blacks with their pants down around their a$$ and their hats on backwards. The guns were a side issue.

Oh great some more hoplophobe, gun grabbers decided to have a 45 min. special on the evil "GUN"....How many others will join their legions after watching it??

It looks like some segments of the program are available here. Anybody know if the whole thing is available anywhere on the web?

I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, there were the typical errors with clips versus magazines and bullets instead of cartridges. There was the loose, diffuse, careless use of 'high-powered,' whatever that means.
Although there were some gratuitous statements that could be considered anti-gun, I was surprised that the show was focused on how bad guys got guns. Then, further focus was on nabbing the gang-bangers. The BATF role, in the show, was directed to the illegal guns and their use by drug gangs.
I could have done without the last part of the program, but the first section was remarkably balanced, given the source.
It seems like the BATF uses the illegal possession of firearms as an excuse to go after the gangs. There are other issues and problems associated with the BATF, but I can't argue with busting violent gangs.

"The Glock, favorite of policemen and criminals alike".......

And a whole big pile of law abiding civilians too.

They also used the word "assault weapon" Such wording will be bad when the antis present an assault weapon ban.
It surprised me that Al Roker had never fired a gun before the show.
Did you notice he held it wrong and proceeded to say how powerful the 9mm was? There was even a slow motion camera showing the recoil. All-the-while implying that regular citizens have access to these weapons, oh no!!!

Thanks camslam for the awesome summary in post 36.

i think the Atf guy that was in the gun room did a good job telling al about the ak that u cant have a full auto one i think al was thinking all ak-47 were full auto

I laughed pretty hard when the ATF agent in the gun vault ID'ed a Barrett M82 as a "Browning machine gun" or something like that. He was so far off, I was embarrassed for him :neener: :D

The fact that so called news stations even have segments "about" anything at all shows they are biased. Their job should be to report about actual happenings in the world. Not to do public interest crap designed to mold opinions

So if Fox News did a piece that went on and on about how the founding fathers wanted us to be well armed and prepared, and how these rifles are no more dangerous then your kid's red-rider bb gun, I imagine you'd say the EXACT same thing...

right?

:)

Yeah, I know what that means but I thought he was referring to the gun, as I didn't hear him say "fifty" in front of it. All I heard was, "This is a browning machine gun."

The program didn't have my full attention, though, so I could've misheard. I was too busy browsing THR :neener:
