Greetings all,

My shooting buddy and I are going 1/2's on a reloading machine. Of course, with this capability I want a very accurate bolt to go with it. I don't hunt, so that's not a consideration. The only immediate range I have access to in NJ has a 300yard maximum range. I've seen a variety of other posts here asking pretty much the same thing. For me, the big thing is accuracy. The following are the rifles I'm considering. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Tikka Varmint in either 6.5x55, .308, .223, .243
CZ 550 American/Varmint(I think that's the model name) in either 6.5x55 or .308
Savage (Not sure of the specific model, but it would be the Law Enforcement version) in .308

From everythink I have read, the stock on the Savage needs to be replaced. I'd like to know more about the Tikka and CZ. I already have a CZ452 American .22lr and a CZ 75BSA in .40 and find their firearms to be very accurate.

Cost being another issue, don't want to spend a large amount of money...doesn't everyone though? Not looking to spend more than $600.00 for the rifle. I currently have a Weaver Grand Slam 6x20 (IIRC) scope that I'll use until I can get something more suited to target shooting.

Also, which of the calibers mentioned, .223, .308, .243, 6.5x55 is easiest on the gun. I understand the .243 quickly deteriates the throat of a barrel. I would rather stay above the .223 on the off chance I ever use this rifle for hunting or the always popular PooPoo hits the fan scenario.

Thanks for your replies,
Ken

While the Savage isn't necessarily "better" than a lot of brands, a heckuva lot of folks have posted their satisfaction with them. Not just here, but back during the years of The Firing Line as well.

From my research, yes a lot of folks are happy with the Savage. I understand though that the stock is not all that great. I've read the Bell & Carlson stocks are good for the money, but then you are adding about $130 or so to the cost of the gun. This puts it pricewise at or near the same pricing as the Tikka and the CZ.

Anyone have any opinions on the CZ and or Tikka?

Them most accurate hunting rifle i currently own is my CZ-550 Premium .270win. I have done zero modifications to it, asside from mounting a 3.5-10x45mm Bushnell in CZ rings. With 54grains of IMR4831 under a sierra 130gr PH seated to 3.301" it'll stay under .5" all day.

I highly recomend them

I had a Tika 550 Master Sporter, with a fully adjustable stock, in .308. Man it was a shooter; sub MOA. I paid about $700 for it new. The only complaint, I really just did'nt like the action. I'm not a hoge fan of push button feed rifles; I know they tend to win in accuracy, so don't start with me guy's, I just like mausers. If I bought another 7.62 target rifle, I think I'd go with the CZ. Only because of said bias.:)

rem 700 vls in 308.

good solid rifle. very accurate. the stock will not need to be replaced. the trigger is easy to work on yourself. under $600 - easily.

Tikka vote hear. Bolt throw is very fast on the short action cartridges. Action is butter-smooth. Out of the box Sub-MOA. You can lighten the trigger yourself. 1/2 MOA with handloads. I've got a Tikka Master Sporter and its all the bolt gun I need (that is until I get a Sako in 338 LM :) )
I'd recommend .260 remington. Short Action, Flat Shooting, Accurate.
