First reloading effort: .40 s&w range ammo. Component Suggestions?

If I'm using a progressive press, I use a CCI brand primer. They're a bit harder than the rest of the brands, and leave less risk of a detonation in the primer hopper.

I don't think I ever loaded a 40 S&W with anything other than CCI small pistol primers.

40 cal, I personally don't like Unique. The pressure/case capacity is such a fine line, I swear I can feel the difference in recoil between those tricky to meter powder throws, especially with the heavier bullets. AutoComp is my goto in 40 cal, but I have also liked W231 for light recoil loads.

MBC 180 TC/FN cast with Unique or slightly slower powder. Xtreme plated 10 TC/FN (Unique) or Rainier 165 HP with 231/hp38 is very accurate. Xtreme is probably the most $$. Ed's Red for cleanup.
