I am about you buy my first rifle and i dont know much about them. I have always been a shotgun hunter but am moving and will be hunting with a rifle. It will mostly be used for target and varmint shooting, but it would be nice if i could deer hunt with it. what is the best caliber and rifle to get that would be good for all those things?

Here's just one wierdo's opinion.

Get a .243. Maybe a Savage 110 or something similar.

.243, or a .308, but the .308 bullets are more expensive, and they kick harder, with more damage to the target-not good if you're collecting furs. My choice would hands-down be the .243!!

If you would also like to use the rifle for deer, I would highly suggest a .25-06 over the .243. IMHO i believe .243 is a bit on the light side for deer.

I think .243 is the minimum caliber for deer in some states. But otherwise completely legal. Just don't use FMJ and you'll be fine.

.25-06 beats .243 in my book. But .243 is more popular. Why? because it is marketed better. Try to shoot both and see what you like more.
