I was mowing some pines and old foodplots this evening, when i noticed a large sow in front of the tractor (+/-40 yards)... kicked the tractor in neutral, pulled my semi-auto 9mm pistol (which i had thoughtfully tucked into my coat pocket), and shot at the big pig... sand kicked up about 3' in front of her, and followed up with shot 2... much closer that time. could not understand why she was hesitant to run... then noticed a group of smaller hogs getting busy behind her, as she dissapeared into the brush... She must have had 10, ~6 lb piglets with her... I opened fire, eliminated 2 of the critters, and possibly hit another. they looked like black popcorn. eratically jumping, darting and running in multiple directions, but at a slower pace than Mama Sow. dang clip ran out of bullets, I knew i should have filled it completely... dug 4 more cartidges out of my pocket, dismounted the tractor, and walked up to one little piglet on the ground... I nudged him with my boot, and he squealed his last few high pitched yelps of terror... The grass was 6' tall in front of me, & i suspected Mama Sow was listening.. i thought to myself "this is going to get exciting", as I've been reading Capstick & "Death on the Dark Continent" ... This sow was not one of the big 5, but nonetheless, was the closest i could find in the neighborhood this evening... I heard Mama Sow grunting in response to squealig piglet, deep in the dog fennel & broomsedge, and started the stalk...

unfortunately, i guess she decided she did not want to play anymore, and she disappeared altogether...
i have some fresh baby pork in the refrigerator this evening, and have eliminated a couple more of the pests... will be back to that spot again!

Cool post. 40 yards with a 9mm would be a tough shot certainly with moving targets. To bad mama didn't play along.
