headed to the local sportsman club today with a friend. we shot a couple rounds of trap to warm up and then shot several rounds of 5 stand. it's been years since i've shot organized trap and have never tried 5 stand before. the scores aren't worth posting

i had a ton of fun though, and got a couple pats on the back for shooting it with my 870 and when everyone else was using an auto or nice double guns. i'll be headed back for sure.

any pointers on what choke to use? i didn't give it a single thought prior and shot with the imp cyl that has been in the gun for grouse season.

I won't say chokes don't matter, but they largely play into the mental game more than anything. There's not much you can't hit with a light modified or modified choke though.

All depends on the targets at your particular 5-stand. One at my local club can easily be shot with an IC or LM. The FITASC parcour (similar aspect) has further targets, so a LM or M is typically a better choice

There's not much you can't hit with a light modified or modified choke though.

I agree - if you are on the bird, you are on the bird - they WILL break

And you are better off having a little too much choke, than not enough

Enjoy it! 5-stand, sporting clays, Super sporting and FITASC are all fun and challenging

Each one is set up differently... the hardest one I know throws very technical but close targets... nothing that couldn't be hit with a skeet choke. Others use distance to make targets hard (which sucks... luck, not skill, plays a much larger role in that situation).

this one is a mix i would say. the furthest birds are probably 40 yards. but there's also a couple that are within 15. a fast crossing double is one of the closer pairs, and it's pretty tough. it's a great time though, and i like the challenge.
