Even in the woods, binoculars are not dead weight. Especially in the woods.
A good pair of binocs will draw light to them, making a dark forest appear brighter. They will also help identify contrasts in the forest and pick up on movement. When I hunt, I am constantly scanning for deer - whether in the deep woods or on a permanent stand with a 1000 yard shooting lane (where I was yesterday).
Some other things to consider is string. Has all sorts of purposes, from helping to lift gun into tree stand to tieing shut rectum to using as a tourniquet in an emergency or helping to secure an emergency lean to if you get stuck overnight.. I usually have at least 20 feet of kit string with me, parachut cord is better but not always practical. If I go deep in the woods, I take a whole roll of kite string and a hydration backpack.
I actually have my hip bag with me on the kitchen table.
This is what I took in the field the last 2 days (killed 2 does).
- Rifle
- Ammo - I usually carry 5 or rounds of whatever I'm shooting (It was .280 Remington this week). Sometimes I will bring different loadings though if I want to shoot other game. It all depends, but I generally strive for one shot kills and outside of bird hunting or squirrel hunting never have taken more than 3 shots in a day
- Knife (Buck 110) on my belt
- Binoculars - Steiner 10x50s. I also have smaller back up "Cabelas" bions, but I don't like them.
Here's whats in the fanny pack that I had in the field with me on my last excusion (in no particular order than that I pulled it out in).
- Knife Sharpener - Diamond Machining Technology key chain diamond fine edge sharpener. Got it at the hardware store, have used it for years. It keeps a razor sharp edge on my blade.
- Gerber sharpener - picked this up at Bass Pro on the way down to the hunt for $6. Its a little thing with a V insert on each side - one for coarse sharpening (to get out knicks, etc, which is why I bought it) and one for fine edges.
- Earplugs - I have 3 pairs. With safety items, redundancy is key.
- 4 AA batteries, 4 AAA batteries - for headlamp/flashlight and GPS.
- Allen Field Dressing Gloves (packet #51) - it has 1 pair of shoulder length gloves and 1 pair of surgical length gloves. I don't usually use these for field dressing, but they are there just in case. I have a box of latex gloves for butchering, etc.
- Butt Out Tool. Brother gave it to me for Christmas last year. Its quick and easy. But not essential (it doesn't take up much room).
- roll of kite string (its probably got 100 yards of string on it)
- 1 double pack of pocket handwarmers, 1 double pack (well, single now - it was 27 degrees the other morning) of toe warmers.
- Ammo Pouch - it holds 10 rounds and has 8 Rounds of .280 Remington in it now. I know I said I USUALLY have 5 rounds, but my tag allowed me to take up to 4 deer and they also had a healthy population of hogs and coyotes and I was hoping to take on or more of those (no luck).
- Separate pouch with all my hunting licenses (I keep them all in one place - I have them for VA, MD, GA, NC.
- Gerber Triode Headlamp
- half eaten pack of Wild Cherry Lifesavers (mmm, good)
- toilet paper - in a zip lock bag. Enough to take a couple of massive dumps.
- KOdak Easy Share Point and Shoot Camera
- compass
- gps
The other things I had with me where a bottle of water and a large cup of coffee.
