BRISTOL, Tenn. — A man fatally shot four people at a public housing complex Wednesday, fled the scene and apparently killed himself, police said.

Rusty L. Rumley opened fire around noon during a domestic dispute at Edgemont Towers, Bristol police spokeswoman Stephanie Hoskins said. She had no other details on a motive for the shootings.

Four people were shot at the 118-unit, 10-story building, which is operated by the city's public housing authority. Three died at the scene on the eighth floor and the fourth died at Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Details on the victims were not immediately available.

Hoskins said Rumley, 26, fled the scene in his vehicle before crashing it near the Sullivan-Carter county line, about 15 miles southwest of Bristol, which is near the Virginia line.

The vehicle was empty when officers arrived, but they eventually found Rumley dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Hoskins said. Rumley was last known to be living in Watauga, near where his body was found.

Capt. Charles Thomas, head of the police department's criminal investigation division, said the department had "very few problems" at the complex.

"Most of the residents are either elderly or disabled," he said.

This version is naturally sorely lacking compared to what I read in the Johnson City (TN) Press (which I don't have with me anymore, so going by memory - bear with me if I screw up some of the details). Apparently the killer was upset over a breakup, but the dead were members of his ex's family...maybe her new b/f...but not HER. The police think he ran out of ammo before fleeing, the gun was a .45 of unspecified make. I guess he saved one round for himself, or reloaded when he fled after the wreck - the police said they heard the shot when he killed himself as they were closing in on him...
