Flaw in my Tikka T3, the Muzzle brake.

This year I recovered enough to deer hunt. My buddy built a partially enclosed deer stand with a roof for me. I was fortunate to get a good shot on a nice doe. I had never paid much attention to the muzzle brake on my Tikka before. Even though the muzzle was outside of the stand the reflection of the blast off the roof and walls was horrible. My ears still ring over a week later. I no longer think my 7-08 Tikka is a perfect deer rifle. If I can figure out what threads it has, I will replace the muzzle brake with a thread protector or something and use ear protection. I am also considering a new rifle of course. I want a .308 but I am considering something lighter like a 6.5 something.
In any case, beware of muzzle brakes, especially in an enclosed area. as I posted elsewhere suggestions are welcome.

That's the nice thing about threaded barrels.

You can change the muzzle device (or remove it entirely!) to best suit your situation.

Putting a can on the end would certainly make it more pleasant.

Something like a linear compensator would make it more tolerable noise and blast wise and require much less paperwork though.

Brakes do reduce recoil more than the linear compensators, but at the cost of much more flash and blast. That effect is multiplied in close quarters.

Something cheap and simple like a thread protector or flash hider might be all you seek though.

Ballistically you'd be splitting hairs between 7-08 and 308. On paper the 7-08 has a slight edge, but in the real world the advantages are negligible. I prefer 308 simply because ammo is readily available and priced cheaper than 7-08. But if I handloaded and had a 7-08 I liked I don't think I could justify swapping for a 308.

I have Tikka's in 308 and 6.5 CM and like the rifles and cartridges. I don't have a brake on either of mine though. IMO there is enough difference between 308 and 6.5CM to justify both. But the 7-08 fits right in the middle and it would be hard for me to justify either 6.5CM or 308 in addition to 7-08. In your shoes I'd probably just put a thread protector on it and run with what I have.

I do like the 7-08 and plan on keeping it. The linear compensator sounds like a good idea. I am kinda looking for an excuse for another rifle. Looking at a few. Just hard to justify.

Not as quiet as a bare muzzle, but not bad.

Can be timed to reduce ground blast signature as well.

On sale, too.

I had an aptly named Ruger “Boomer” muzzle brake on my SFAR in .308. Not only was it loud, but even with hearing protection, the sideways blast was pretty significant to those nearby.
I looked at a variety of options and decided that next year I am buying a can, but in the meantime I installed an A2 flash hider. It mitigates muzzle rise and the noise isn’t as bad. The only draw back is with the Boomer brake I could see my target even under recoil. Not so much now, but that’s okay.

I'll assume rifle is scoped ?. So slip a 2 liter soda bottle over the end ,one shot wonder as it redirects blast sound forward .
one can get fancy and wrap the bottle with cloth or tape ,you can even use those flavored water drink bottles ONCE ,as they're slimmer .

New builds at the time ,so I was sighting scope and walking shots . Happy to say extremely accurate and Very happy with Aero foundation as they're Quality components .
:) AR10 platform 6.5 CM ,also .308 as everything is interchangeable quickly ,simply switch uppers two pin pull .

I no longer think my 7-08 Tikka is a perfect deer rifle.
I don't know enough about that cartridge to comment on whether it's the "perfect" deer rifle. IMO, there is no such thing. I can say though that the flaw isn't with the rifle here. Just lose the muzzle brake.

Tikkas probably either m14-1 or 5/8-24

Suppressor would be the ideal answer

Ive used a couple linears and found they did help with directing the blast away from the bystanders primarily, which would help keep blast down in your situation.

I took the brake off my Mesa in 7-08, but put it back on because it looks kinda odd off and my shooting areas done reflect much sound back at the shooter.

I've only used a muzzle break once after shoulder injury. The 30-06 is loud as it is but when I put that muzzle break holy Moses it brought new meaning to thunder. I only shot it 3 times at the range as I was checking my zero for a deer hunt and I angered many shooters that day because every time I shot it would set off the alarms .

Yeah, I tried M14-1 and 5/8 24 and neither one fit. Maybe 9/16 something. M14-1 is close, but threads are wrong too fine, tried M14-1.5, threads too course. I'll think of something.
