I am heading down to Ft. Lauderdale tomorrow for a family emergency. In light of the gas shortages and the large number of refugees florida is going to be seeing, I don't want to travel unarmed.

I would like to take my Colt 1991A1 along with ammo with me. I've flown with a gun before but never from National Airport. Has anyone here ever flown out of National with a firearm? Is there anything I need to know as far as process that is different than at other airports (for instance, you have to travel through a national park to get there).

Thanks, appreciate it.

Yes, I have done it (post 9/11). The procedure there is that the airline is supposed to notify TSA that the bag has a declared firearm in it. Make sure that they do. If they don't (mine didn't) they won't hold it against you, but you will be delayed while they file an "official incident report."

Allow extra time for check-in.

Is Reagan National actually in Washington DC? Could there be a problem with local authorities regarding the Nazi-esqe ban on guns?

You may want to contact the TSA on these issues before showing up with something that could be confiscated.
