What are your thoughts about the FN five-seven pistol and it's unusual ammo caliber?
The gun is expensive and so is ammo.
Does anyone know about this gun or have you shot one? Thanks.

Don't know much about it yet, but I intend to get one as soon as I get back from the desert.

That is a good link. I have put about 500 rounds through mine at this point and it's a fun, easy shooter.

Short version:
Pros:
1. No recoil.
2. Light-weight system.
3. NPR is against it.
4. Great range for a pistol.
5. 20 round mags.

Cons:
1. Expensive.
2. FN dosn't really want you to have one (unless you are LEO).
3. Odd shape - few holster choices (you have to shop where the Secret Service shops).
4. Less "Stopping power" then a .45 ACP
5. Loud indoors - 2100fps makes quiet a crack.

FN Five Seven

Concur with Yo, although I only got to shoot one clip- It is also a BIG sumb***ch. It's not something you can carry concealed... It was interesting how light the recoil was; I really expected it to be heavier. They are out there, most want around $800 for them and there is the question of ammo. Remember, YMMV :)

I've fired one alongside the P90, and it makes more sense to me in the submachinegun role; the pistol feels like one of those Ramline Exactor pistols, only chambered in 22 Magnum instead of Long Rifle. It's certainly a neat design, the way they got it to work as a blowback with a tapered case, but I don't think it would be my choice for a defensive pistol.

I also put a few rounds through Yojinbo's 5-7, and the low recoil really can't be compared to anything other than a .22lr. Plus, the ammo comes packed in those cool little boxes of 50 (one per P90 mag, I guess).

Yojinbo really needs to put his Leica to use and post some pics of the rig and ammo next to say, a US quarter dollar for reference. :)

Old NFO: I would say you *could* carry it concealed if you're comfortable carrying a Glock 20/21 or full size Para IWB ;)

Rhineland Arms is strongly considering chambering, if not testing now, their rifle in 5.7x28.

If they do, it's going to make it a tough decision for me whether to get it in .22 or Five seveN. I can afford ca'triges.

Regards,
Rabbit.

I think 5.7 would be a neat little cartridge to have popularized, kind of in the same way as .17 WMR.

While the ammunition is not as cheap as most pistol ammo, we sell it for 16.54 per box. It's not too expensive. It is a very accurate pistol, and very friendly to shoot. Actually FN does not care now if you are a LEO or not, just under the clinton ban they wanted it to go to LE and military.

I'm taking a hard look at this as an alternative to my .40 caliber H&K P2000 as CCW. If I understand it, it would be slightly larger than my P2000. No one has really commented on FN's quality.

Opinions, comments?

bravocharlie,

Mine has some fit and finish issues. Mold nipple marks at the very front under the barrel and the two linked safty levers are not quite "true" with one another.

Very picky, but for .8k I expect near perfection.

The mechanical functioning is supurb. I have almost 1000 rounds through mine now without one jam.

It is big, but if your hands are big enough to hold it you could likely hide one under a suit jacket without bulge.

Sylvilagus Aquaticus,

I am intrigued about a rifle added to this system. It would be a very expensive prarrie dog round, but I would buy one without hesitation. I was thinking about haveing a CZ short bolt smithed down for it.

In fact, I'm 'in line' for a civilian 16" P90 now.

Both the Secret Service and Federal Protective Service have adopted the P90 and Five-seveN. They appear to be very happy with the ballistics of the round (even from the pistol)
There are several reports floating around the internet about the rounds effectiveness. Fackler didn't like it, but if it isn't labeled .40 or higher, he doesn't seem interested. The SS and FPS obviously liked it enough to adopt it.
One report stated the a BG shot with a 5.7 round had his heart literaly cut in half. The doctor said he had never seen a wound like that.
