Hey new THR member here. Been using these forums for years for info through google just never posted. Seems like some great guys on here good community I'm glade to finally post.

Basically for short I bought a FNAR my first new rifle. Every other gun except a few XDs was handed down to me from family. I'm in the market for a Bi-Pod & Scope for the FNAR and I just don't know anything about them. I've just never owned or been in the market for a scope & pod. Whats important to me is durability/reliability and No Batteries. I hate anything that takes Batteries. Here is a link to the model and stats of the rifle I'm looking to mount this stuff on. If anyone owns this rifle and has experience shopping for a Bi-Pod & Scope and is willing to post a few brands my way so I can research I'd sure appreciate it. I'll be using the rifle for range shooting mostly and possibly some dear hunting. My price range is $500.00 - $1500.00. Sniping scopes interest me and tactical like ACOGs not so much.

If you have the budget for a Nightforce, 1600-1800 depending on model, then go for it. You will not be disappointed. Other good options are the Super Sniper line from swfa.com or Bushnell Elite 3200 or 4200, all are good scopes for the money. As for bipod, Harris all the way, 6"-9" would probably be good.

Hey thanks for the posts and info:

I plan on doing a lot of bench and prone shooting which BiPod has the appropreate length?

This one looks good and sturdy 6 - 9" HBR-S

I'm really attracted to the speed & accuracy of the NXS 3.5-15 x 50 F1 I just didn't realize it was worth more then the rifle. Is there anything else like this model that is competitive?

The bipod you linked is a Harris and 6-9" is good for bench and prone. There are two style of legs, one is standard(in the link) which you have to loosen thumb screw to slide leg out and re-tighten thumb screw, the other style leg is spring loaded and has notches on the leg, just push the lever and leg comes out, release and it locks into a groove. Either will work just fine, a matter of preference. Yea that F1 is sweet and has a big price tag. I looked at that one and just couldn't justify the additional 800 for the only difference being it is a FFP scope. I have the NSX 3.5x15x50 MLR(Mil Line Reticle) and have zero complaints. Mine is on a .223 but you might want to think about going a little bigger for that .308, maybe the NSX 5.5x22x50 in your choice of reticle. IMO at the Nightforce price point I don't know of any to beat it. Of course you can always go better, look at US Optics or Schmidt & Bender, just be sure you are sitting when you do, lol.

I hate you ARMS!

Joking - I want the FNAR (or a Springfield Scout Squad) also but need to wait for budgetary reasons.....................curious what the final rig looks like.

Before you spend too much $$$ on the scope - you may want to eye-up reloading/ammo costs----the 308 is pricy to feed...................................

Yea I hear you. I already went out and bought a 100 rounds to break her in. I'll do 2 shots then swab her with a wet one then a dry one then wait until she cools down then repeat 100 times. I can't remember what the guys were calling the process but its suppose to break in your barrel and protect it for life. I was just at the store looking at a XTR Burris 3x12 Scope for $900.00 - looked like a good deal I'm still partial to this NightForce NXS1550 scope but $1483.00 is a lot of money. I'd like to stay accurate up to around 1000 yards for sport.

Before I got the Rifle I been researching a few months on these forums on handloading/reloading so I went and got setup with a RCBS single stage press and all the rest the tools. I'm still a beginner but learning slowly steadily on my own.

Truth is I follow politics a lot and I know whats going on out there and there are a lot of people in power now against our Constitution/B.O.R. 2nd Amendment. Obummer and his crew making deals with ammo manufactures agreeing to give them military contracts if they stop producing so much civilian ammo etc. So I'm spending the money now and exercising my rights while I still have them even though parts are scarce and prices are high and my mags almost impossible to find. I'm still young was planning on doing this when I got older but I think I have to now and this works.

And thanks otrman checking out the NSX 5.5x22x50

Be careful when thinking of spending less for a scope. You did not buy a cheap rifle, could have found many less expensive options but you bought a good one....... If you come home w/ a $1100 scope you could spend the next 10 years looking at the nightforce............ I'll admit I don't spend near that on mine, but I'm guessing I'm usually satisfied w/ less expensive taste than many.....

FWIW............

Thanks Tony your right this will probably be my only main rifle for some time that's why I wanted a good one. I just want to have a real good one on hand just incase and to get familure with and practice with. I'll go with a Nightforce scope not sure which one I'll probably call them tomorrow and talk to a sales rep or employee.

Whats that process called when you break in a bran new barrel?

I mounted a Leupold VXIII 40mm and a Harris bipod on my FNAR. If I'd had your budget I'd probably get the same scope in 50mm and an Atlas bipod instead.

That reminds me, when I was first searching for a bipod I asked one of the guys at Cabelas if they had any picatinny mount bipods in stock and he said sure and walked me over to the Shooting Sticks display. He then said (no joke) "now these here aren't made of tin, they're made of aluminum, but that's better than tin." I considered repeating what I'd actually asked for but said "thanks" instead. Sometimes it's just not worth the effort.

Look at the Weaver line, 2.5-10x50, very high quality scope, natchez puts them on sale from time to time, for around $300, full retail is around $600. As far as I'm concerned, the Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 holds its own against scopes costing twice as much, its very clear and bright, I have on on my mini-14, its awesome. You don't have to spend $1000 to get a good scope.

I don't mean to sound like an Ass when spending others money but the most common thing you hear on this sight is, "Spend as much on glass as you can afford!" I don't have a scope that costs over $350 or so, most under $200. That being said I look at ones that cost around $400-650 all the time to see what I want. I don't have a $1500 rifle that I plan on shooting a lot either. I did go with the Buris FFII, 3-9x40 on my 7mm STW, if it's worth twice what I paid- $200ish, I'll sell it right now for $300........

Buy the best you can, once. It will last you FOREVER

I do have a custom 1911, spent lots of $$ and will never replace it......Spent the money once.

I just think it's nuts when looking at glass that is over $1K to then look at the $300-$600 range because it's a "good deal".......

I don't know a thing about bipods, Harris or better?? should be fine...

Thanks, and sorry for the rant......

Bushnell?

At the risk of being branded a heretic, let me throw this out. I have an FNAR that I got a few months ago, and at the time the only scope I had laying around was a Bushnell Stalker that a friend had given me. It's not even carried anymore, as far as I can tell, but we're probably looking at a WalMart special, $50 or $75. I thought I would just throw it on to shoot the first few rounds through and get a feel for the rifle, and now I don't know if I'll take it off. I'm so impressed with how bright and clear this little El Cheapo 3-9 is, that I'm kinda rethinking my scope beliefs. Ya know?

Seriously, I don't mean to come across like I'm criticizing your desire to go for a great scope...but if your goal is mainly range stuff and some deer hunting, maybe a $200-$400 Nikon, Leupold, Bushnell, or Burris (or even Cabela's Alaska Guide series scopes) would be just as effective *for your purposes* as a $1,000+ whizbang model.

I wish you all the best, and I hope you enjoy your FNAR as much as I enjoy mine.

Take care,
frayluisfan

i got a fnar with a harris series S BRM bipod and a bushnell elite 3200 4x12 40mm scope. I'm very happy with both bipod was $100 scope $300.

Watch the scope rings I had to go with super high rings and they barely make it i got 40mm scope and my rings are rated for 50mm+
