Given that the 8mm is a european cartridge that has been and is being loaded to a moderate 55,000psi, even though I'm sure it could go to 60,000psi very easily in a modern rifle, why did SAMMI put the American limit at 35,000psi. They castrated a great cartridge. Was it diameter envy?

The 8x57 was introduced with the 1888 Commission rifle which had a .318 bore diameter. There were a few other early 8mms that used .318 as well. When the 1898 Mauser came along, the bore diameter was increased to .323. I believe that the SAMMI specs for the 8 x 57 consider these early rifles and specify very light loads so that they will be safe in them.

A 98 Mauser or a more modern rifle can be safely loaded much hotter than the SAAMI spec. BTW, the Remmington 700 Classic for this year is 8x57.

Sometimes, one can find Norma or German ammo for a modern 8X57, but be sure you know if you have the old 8X57mm J (.318 bore) or the 8X57mm JS which became standard following 1905, and which uses a .323" bullet.

There are also rimmed forms of each, meant for double rifles and "drillings" with both shotgun and rifle barrels.

There are a number of other 8mm rounds, so be very sure what you want before ordering ammo.

I suggest that you buy, "Cartridges opf the World" by Frank Barnes. He died some years ago, but it has been updated by other authors. Look at Border's or other major booksellers, where they stash, "Gun Digest" and other titles by the same publisher.

I happen to have recently purchased a Rem 700 classic in 8x57 and am pissed about the availability of commercially loaded ammo. I do reload, but SAMMI still pisses me off, or should I say the lawyers that SAMMI is afraid of piss me off. I guess in the end it's those Democrats that are to blame. Yeah. :)

Brasso-

I'm pretty sure that you're joking, but aren't most voracious trial lawyers actually Democrats? Really.
