For those of you wondering if a .17 HMR can take a deer..

We have alot of native americans in my area, but on the reserve or not they still have to abide by the rules of which firearm is legal to hunt with. They just dont have to follow open season or quantity limits if I remember right. But thats here.. could very well be a different story where ever this video is made.

Completely incorrect. The Federal Government has absolutely no standing whatsoever on Tribal land (reservation land) when it comes to hunting and fishing. The Tribal leadership of each reservation sets any and all rules regarding hunting and fishing. That includes caliber restrictions as well as seasons and bag limits. The "elders" set all rules. On some reservations they do copy the state regulations because in some states they are reasonable and well suited for the game population. In no way does the Federal government have any control whatsoever in the hunting and fishing matters of the tribes.

I am pretty sure that Montana has no minimum for maximum caliber requirements for deer or elk. In fact, even crossbows are allowed to be used in rifle season

HHollow, All states allow archery equipment during firearm season. My question for you is, why is that a problem? Would you have a problem with a crossbow during bow season? As long as a weapon is used within it's reasonable range and intended use, why would it matter what season it is being used in to you? As long as it is legal and being used in an ethical manner, it is no problem whatsoever.

who are we to tell native Americans what to do on land that was all theirs and now they have little if that is what this all about..they used to hunt buffalo with longbows with stone tips....a .17 is much more efficient compared t o that.

a .17 is much more efficient compared t o that.

Being an archer, I would have to disagree with that statement. Even with primitive equipment such as the flint arrowhead, they still had very good penetration and were quite effective at dispatching a Bison. a .17hmr wouldn't even penetrate the hide on a Bison.

Here in SC, the hunting regs say you may only hunt boar (and coyote if I remember right) after sunset with either a pistol (any caliber) or a rimfire. Rimfire for boar :what:?!?!? What is the logic in that legislation??

The idea is that it's hard to be certain of the background at night, so they want to only allow firearms with limited range (compared to centerfire rifles).

I have heard the ballistically ignorant try to twist this around as an argument for using rimfires on hogs. :banghead:

Not in Texas. Those are used by poachers and the uninformed. The kind og folks the Game Warden s have to visit.
