Does anyone know if the front sight assy is secured/machined the same as say, a Gew98 or a 98/22?
I am building a, uh, well.......
Steyr M1912 stock set (just won on Ebay, has a bolt notch cut in it
), Kar98K receiver (D&T'd), and some other misc parts I have laying around of mixed Czech/German origin. I've decided to build a long rifle out of it, and I'm hunting a 29" LR 8mm barrel.
Gun parts has 3 options, Gew98 in fair shape, 98/29 Persian in good condition, or a 1909 Argentine also in good shape. The are all well priced, and all include sights. I have a 1909, but ammo is much harder to find than 8mm obviously, and I know GPCs "fair" all too well.
That really leaves the Persian barrel, however, in reading up on it in Balls book, the front sight looks quite a bit different. Any input on whether or not a Gew style front sight base will fit without having to alter this in the lathe would be great (or is it just a detachable hood???)
