I have been tinkering with a Marlin 336 for a couple of years now and finally have it in its final form. After trying it with a scope I decided to go with iron sights. I have 4 different loads I shoot so finer adjustment was needed than the factory irons could provide. I ended up with a Ranger Point standard aperture rear and a Skinner standard Patridge blade. The blade is quite thin and allows me to use a center hold on a 12” target at 100 yards, which I can’t do with standard front posts.
Now for the question. I am now exploring thinner or different front sights for my 223 dedicated to its carry handle aperture sight. Is there a better option than the standard front post? Is there a chevron or thinner post that works well? I’ve also seen front apertures with crosshairs inside that seem like they might work. I shoot hand loads out of it almost exclusively, which for now are 55 grain FMJ at around 3000 fps. I’ve had groups under 1.5” at 100 yards but most are around 2-2.5. This is purely a target rifle. My intent is to take out as far as my unaided eyes will let me.
