Gents,

I was lucky enough to be part of the group #1 Fulton WR buy. It took a few months, but I was able to purchase all USGI parts for it along with some more contemporary upgrades:

Description:

Fulton WR engraved receiver
Winchester M-14 Op rod
Fulton 18 inch chrome lined barrel
Smith Enterprise CA muzzle brake
Smith Enterprise Ghost ring Gas lock sight (H&K style ring)
USGI HRA bolt
USGI TRW Trigger group
Rooster 33 Spring guide rod
USGI Unitized gas system
Specter Gear SOP Sling
Arms #18 mount
Arms #22M68 QD ring
Aimpoint Comp M2 Optic
Whamo Camo Super Six Two Stock
Smith Enterprise Extended (AR style) bolt release

Built by Ted Brown

Believe it or not, the total cost of the rifle was CHEAPER than buying a standard SA in Kali!

Enjoy

Very nice!

Mind if I ask roughly how much you have in just the gun? How much would it cost to build a bare bones standard M1A of comparable parts?

Well (before optics), about $1250K delivered. Alot of the parts are enhanced and I found some GREAT deals. Here in Kali, the same rifle would cost about $1500. Patience and looking for good deals paid off.

That looks like the sniper rifle I use when I play Desert Combat (a mod for BF1942). W00t. Its really nice looking man.

I'm glad to see that you went with a custom route instead of buying an off the shelf SA. You made the correct and wise choice.

Yeah,

It was my first "build". Don't get me wrong, I have (2) other M1A's from SA and they have been great (yeah, they have had some custom work). But they are early M1A's ser# 14xxxx and below, that are nice before the QA problems started popping up.

But this one is special! Made to my exact specs.....

If you'd like to recoup your investment just let me know, I'll buy it right now. Absolutely gorgeous rifle. I'm fairly new to the M14 world, I've had my LRB for about 2 months now and I'm completely addicted. My next purchase is gonna be a rifle pretty much identical to yours.

BTW, how much does whamo camo charge? They're tops in my book.

Thanks for the offer, but this one is very special and built EXACTLY the way I wanted it! (I got the Super Six Two stock specifically because of Randy Shughart in "Black Hawk Down") I wanted a rifle ALMOST exactly like his save for the fact I wanted it in a Bush length.

Well, I am lucky in the fact that I have (2) Whamo Camo stocks. Rick Mack aka Sixty Gunner @ the www.m-14forum.com does not make them anymore @ this time.

Why do you say that?

Have the Springfield M1A's had problems?

Mace:

Would you be so kind as to tell me more about the process involved in building your rifle?

I'm going to buy an M1A at some point and am pretty much settled on the Springfield Scout, but some of the comments in this thread are nagging at me a bit. I'm considering perhaps building my own, if I can save money AND get a better product in the end.

Did you actually do it yourself, or did you just buy the parts and have Ted Brown assemble it?

Thanks

Springfield Armory's quality control for their M1A has gone way down during the past several years. While they use cast as opposed to forged receivers, this isn't that big a deal compared to the fact that SA does not use USGI parts anymore. Granted, you would expect new, reproduction parts will work fine, but for some reason, they have a tendency to fail on the SA production guns.

Considering the cost of a Springfield M1A Scout is $1400+, it is a significant investment. Building one from the ground up from a quality receiver like the Fulton Armory and using all USGI parts is going to cost maybe a little higher than an off the shelf gun, yet function with more reliability, and will be more cost efficient.

So if I wanted to build a Scout-style M1A without optics and a fancy stock, I could save even more money, eh?

Hmmm..... :)

What's a good source for parts?

Could I build the M1A myself or is a gunsmith going to be required?

#1 Patience.....takes time to gather goooooood USGI parts.

Receiver...my personal preference: Fulton Armory (like this one), LRB or earlier SA serial # (14xxxx and below)

Barrel....18'' Bush length from Fulton, chrome lined (I found this one, NIW for a GREAT price)

Bolt.....HRA, TRW, Winchester: (USGI)

USGI gas system, unitized

Good parts can be found @ www.warrifles.com or www.m-14forum.com

Gather the parts and send it to Ted Brown.....

Good choice...nuttin wrong with a Scout. You can buy one and then send it to Ted and he can give it a reeeeaaaaal good once over, replace the bolt with a USGI, unitized the gas system, give ya a good trigger job and you will be good to go!

I had a bit of "tuning" up done....

What's the thinking on the HK style sights. I looks like it costs you an inch or two of sight radius..... is there any upside?

EVERYONE who has made the conversion loves it!!! (2) of my (3) M1A's have them....

Upside:

1:Easier to line up the sights, just place the front ring inside the rear sight aperature (sp?) line up the post and you good to go.

2: Quicker!

3: Front post is protected by the hood

4: Rock solid....

Could I build the M1A myself or is a gunsmith going to be required?

You could...but..Ted is the man, GREAT prices, FAST turn around and customer service second to none...(Oh yeah, he can build one h*** of a rifle!)

Mace, thank you very, very much for the detailed reply. :)

What does it mean to "unitize" the gas system?

Thanks!

I knew you dropped some serious coin on your guns but one million, two hundred fifty thousand dollars for one rifle?
Perhaps you are thinking about how much the mini cost.
Seriously though, nice rifle! especially for PRC.
