marlin 981t, these are excellent shooters and very accurate. tube fed will shoot shorts, long and long rifle. later down the add the rifle basix trigger to it and you'll end up with one awesome .22, marlin makes excellent barrels....at least they did in their older production guns. don't know to much about them since the move to ky.

I'd say hit the used rack...

I agree, if the bore is good.
I found this old Winchester 69A last year (with scope dovetails.)
I put a cheap but adequate BSA 3-9 x 32 scope on it and it's a great squirrel rifle.

I don't think anyone is criticizing anyone else's shooting

Did you miss the smiley?

BTW I own several Marlins. I own several Savages. The difference between a really accurate rifle and a decently accurate rifle isn't all that much. But it does exist. My most accurate rimfire is a Savage MkII but it's only a shade better than my CZ. My Marlins are all accurate but I've had some that weren't. I sold those. But none of them match what the CZ does and the Savage is even better. If you want a semi-auto then get a Marlin by all means (unless you want a project rifle then get a Ruger). But he did say "bolt action" and I have never shot a Marlin bolt action rifle that matches what my CZ will shoot. Never

Here's another suggestion for the Savage Mk II. Mine's the BV edition, with heavy barrel and laminated stock. Love the accutrigger.

Colt Python, since you actually shot in competition as opposed to some on here, I would be interested in your recommendations for rifles to use in competition. I assume we are talking .22lr. My best gun is a 540xr and I have two good CZ's. I know the next step up would be Kimber, Anshutz, 40x, Winchester 52. Are the new RAR doing any good? What cheaper rifles are good? Marlin, Savage, Zavasta, Ruger, Remngton?

I took 2nd place in Texas regionals in 2012 and often place in our local club. USBR. My gun is a 40X action that has been trued, Benchmark barrel, Jewell 2oz trigger, tuner and T36 scope on a Sinclair competition rest. My wife's rifle was built by the winner of 2013 USBR nationals and is a custom Myer's action with 6-o-clock FP, Myers barrel, Jewell trigger, tuner and T36.

We tried tuning a Kimber 82G. Did a lot to the rifle, including trigger job, tuner, T36. Never quite got to as good as a dedicated bench rifle. After tuning, the Kimber would do 0.3-0.4" 5-shot groups at 50 yards. So yes, very accurate, but not as good as our dedicated bench guns.

The Anschutz 54-series are very good actions, so is the 40X and the Winnie 52's. Also good are the Suhls. All of them need machining to be exactly true. Custom actions run around $1k and are already trued. If you want a cheap competition rifle, check out the classifieds on the benchrest forum. People sell used rifles at a large discount to building one yourself.

If I was building a competition benchrest rifle today, it would be a custom action for sure.

For an idea of how the custom 40X shoots, this is 5-shots at 50 yards:

Benchrest is hard...

I shoot in local matches in two or three places. One group I shoot with requires a factory barrel. I shoot Remington Model 37's & use them in the place that are less restrictive also. I love my 37's, but wouldn't recommend them due to the lack of parts and difficulty of mounting a modern scope. Yes, I know about the Vianni mount, but they are outta production.

For a factory gun, I would recommend a 40x, 54 Match or Win. 52.

Above, I was talking about heavy guns. This thread is more about sporters. I shoot matches in that class, too. Most of the guys I shoot with use a CZ of some variety.

I have a Savage Mk II FV-SR (16.5" bbl) with an AAC Pilot2 mounted. Right now it has my Aimpoint CompM2 that was left without a rifle after I traded my AR. You wanna talk about fun to shoot! Nothing beats a quiet rifle that can pick off pinecones from 50 yards with ease.

I had a Mk II F, the basic Mk II. I had bought it from a co-worker for $100. I wound up selling it to my father-in-law after I made the mistake of letting him shoot it. He was hitting soda cans at 100 rds with regularity. It was either sell it or hear him ask about buying everytime I saw him (we live next door)...

I also have a CZ 452 American in 17 HMR. That is a heck of a rifle as well! I would not hesitate to buy another in 22lr if it came along. Topped with a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 it shoots better than I can.

How can some just assume they know others don't participate in competitions? I won 15 out of the last 17 competitions I was in shooting against some very good shooters. I guess that means I'm not one of those that don't shoot competitions. But I wouldn't dare assume I knew something about others I couldn't possibly know.

I own CZs, Remingtons, and Marlin bolt rimfires. With all of them, the ammo makes the difference between good shooters and great shooters. They all like something different.
The OP stated he wanted a fun rifle for plinking. For that, just about any of the rifles named will give a lifetime of enjoyment. Fun guns and serious competition rifles are apples and oranges.

Have a couple nice 10-22s modded up but picked up a Dicks Special Savage MKII bolt for nephews to shoot. Plastic green stock with heavy fluted barrel. Slapped old Bushnell 4x on it...whoa that thing is accurate...load some good ammo in it and it'll shoot 10 shots dime size at 50yds all day. Worth getting the pricey stuff for this gun.

A dime is .7" in diameter. Ten shot dime sized groups repeatedly at 50 yards with a 4x is some good shootin'.

I have the Savage MK II BTV and love it. At first, I wasn't thrilled about how the thumbhole stock looked. But when I held it and shot it, my mind was changed. Super comfortable to shoot. One of my favorite .22LR bolt actions now.

Maybe so CeeZee. If you post like a fanboy how would one know you are just a biased fanboy with skewed results or not. You posted a great many words in one thread about a rifle you never even shot. Not that I am casting stone because I have sorta done it too.
We are opinionated on here and I accept that. Just some opinions are more something than others. Of course people that agree with me are more credible LOL. Keep posting, I may disagree but I respect that you have something to say.

What rifle did I discuss that I haven't shot? Exactly what did I say about any rifle that I haven't shot? I haven't said ONE word about any rifle I haven't shot in this thread. NOT ONE. If you think so then prove it.

And don't give me that fanboy bull. What am I supposed to be a fanboy of? I've said good things about 5 or 6 different rifles in this thread. I said this in post #11:

"The truth is there are lots of nice rifles around though."

That sounds just like fanboy stuff to me. Oh wait. It sounds like just the opposite of fanboy stuff. Yeah that's it.

You don't seem to have a clue what I've said. Welcome to my kill filter. You seem to be following me from thread to thread in a desperate attempt to prove me wrong about anything at all. This one takes the cake. I will give you one chance to prove I said a single word about a gun I haven't shot no matter what thread it's in.

Good grief some people just can't live without trying to put someone else down. If you have something to say about my comments then QUOTE THEM. Don't come here with this stuff about something I said in another thread without even bothering to mention what thread it was in. That's as bogus as it gets.

I have and use Remington 521T, Marlin mag fed bolt gun with 1-4 X scope, winchester model 52 and 75, and one of my favorites for all time Mossberg M44. My M12 H&R is a real tack driver too. None of these are new now. But you can probably find these at your lgs or internet. I have shot many 10s of thousands of rounds through these. They are all pretty awesome little guns. YMMV. :D

I've a Marlin 81DL (circa late 40's/early 50's) and a newer Savage MarkII (with a Boyd's stock). Both have inexpensive (oh heck - let's just be honest and say pretty cheap) optics. On a calm day when the targets aren't bouncing and twisting both make sub dime-sized five-round groups at 50 meters. As I write this, there are two 81's on Gunbroker; bidding on one (a DL with a peep sight) is at $150; the other (a DL) is currently at $99. Good luck with your search.

I believe he was referring to the RAR thread.

And I believe he was trolling by making unfounded accusations. What, I said there were reports that there were problems with the RAR. Wow. Shoot me. I never claimed to shoot one. Of course he didn't say that. Funny thing is neither did you. PLONK
