Well this spring when all the leaves came on the trees, I started getting a low limb drooping close to the back porch roof. I opened the back door yesterday morning to a green abyss on the porch. The limb had partially split where it branched off of the main trunk and was lying partially on the porch. The limb is about 8 inches in diameter and about 20 feet long and approx. 20 feet up to where it is split. I do not currently have a chain saw (normally use stepdads but he is in mexico) so I tie a rope to it and begin to try to pull it from the tree......this is stupid on my part because it is still hanging on for dear life and shows little sign of moving, but I did get it off the porch roof and it is now hanging down to the ground. So there I stand looking at this catalpa tree like a challenge. Then it hits me, I walk in the house, look at my wife and say "this sounds stupid, but, im gonna shoot it out". I can see the look on her face that she has her doubts. So I load up the AR with soft points and walk outside. I can do this because I live in a remote area with no neighbors. Engaged the target and low and behold 6 shots later im draggin a huge limb behind my truck to the burn pile. :D
just thought I would share this odd application of a firearm

When I was way younger/dumber we used to shoot the tops off of fir trees as 'target practice'. Don't think I'd be comfortable doing it now, having no idea where the bullet's landing and not having access to a huge piece of land. But assuming you know your property.

My grandfather uses his Marlin 94 to finish seating high primers on his reloads at the range. "Don't do this in your basement" he used to warn me. :)

oh yeah... property not a problem I made sure to stand at an angle that designates a safe drop zone... lot of deserted strip mine land where I live

Ive done similar with a 12ga and #4s to prevent limbs covered with ice from falling into power lines.

I've thought about using my gun to knock the fleas off my dog, but my wife won't let me!:D

Guns are specialized tools.

Pulling Homer Simpson stunts of using them to turn on the lights or open a beer can or whatever is, frankly, not all that bright.
