If you are talking about a CC Steyr in .40 that would probably be the S40. The newer version, the S40A1, only came into the country in very limited numbers. The S40 (and S9) is the older version, preferred by some as it has a rather unique manual safety.
Due to a very low bore axis the perceived recoil of these pistols is low. With a .40 you will probably find recoil on par with a 9mm. Some early Steyrs had extraction problems but that is something that Steyr services. If you want the the S40 you will probably have to buy a used one as they were replaced by the A1 model, and as I have said few made it into the country. Steyr is no longer importing into the US so no further guns will come in. They will service guns into the future.
As to accuracy, you will find a gun perfectly suited for self-defense. It's not a target gun but more than reasonably accurate. Other than the extraction problems they are very reliable guns. I depend on an S9 on a daily basis that has never missed a beat.
Also, you have seen prices on these guns that were due to problems with Steyr unrelated to the gun itself that resulted in a greatly reduced price through a selloff by CDNN. These guns retailed for closer to $600, their true worth, and you will only see values rise as time goes on. CDNN is down to their very last guns (may all be gone) and I doubt folks will be selling them used in the future based on what they paid for them to CDNN.
If you can't get hold of an S40 (very popular as they can also use .357 SIG barrels) you might consider an S9. Using quality +P self-defense ammo you will be really close to what you would have with .40, and possibly with less recoil. I would like to find an S40 so that I could put my M357A1 barrel in it with just a little bit of barrel extending out of the muzzle, which is irrelevant. The S9 is far more common. Steyr slides and frames are modular allowing for a good amount of mixing and matching.
