Future hog hunting trip?

The owner of some rice fields invited me to help kill some hogs. Let me clarify, he wants me to bring my Cobb 50 for him to shoot a hog. First question, would it make a big difference between FMJ or API? Not planning on harvesting, just getting rid of. (These are my two options of 50 ammo on hand) Second question, plan on bringing my 338 Lapua, which round to penetrate the shield(s), 250 gr scenar or 265 gr OTM Berger ammo by HSM? Or does any of it really matter for shots 300 yards and under for either caliber?
 
Wouldn't matter. Ive seen a hog it buy a 50 on a range in OK. Same thing that happens to everything else. Ive used 225 grainers from my 338 win mag. Though and thought at over 400 yards. My 8mm mauser and 3006 eat their lunch at 300.
 
Chad, through and through, not a doubt. But were they DRT or did they require tracking? Not wanting to track to inspect for damage. Like I said don't want to eat them, but do want to see exactly how much damage these calibers do. Thinking about it now may try all of them to compare differences in entrance/exit wounds. Just don't want to expect to kill them with one shot and find that they run off instead.
 
With either FMJ or API it will be a thumb size hole all the way through the animal.

Is the Incendiary compound in the API rounds still active? If so, keep in mind those can start fires.

Dang, knew I was over looking something. Thanks Leon. Just remembered I do have one more 50 cal choice, 750 gr Amax rounds also loaded by HSM.
 
The hogs I saw hit with the 50s were literally blown apart. You get even a gut shot and the hog drop quick. Using soft points or Cup and core out of my 8mm or 06 and most don't go far.
 
Have a 50 BMG and 338LM myself and lots of hogs. With the BMG I choose to only shoot steel with earth berms behind them. Never considered shooting critters with it as I know it delivers more than enough to get the job done.
Please be aware of what is beyond your target when shooting/hunting with a 50 BMG.

The Lapua will do ok with what you have at 300yd. The hog would have to be absolutely huge before the frontal shield is heavy enough to stop those bullets given the short distance.


If your buddy is serious about controlling hogs in his rice fields he should consider aerial eradication. It's much more effective than conventional hunting.
 
Fixing to start 7/12's, should have known something would happen to ruin my hunt. I guess there is always next year. This will give me time to purchase better suited ammo for the task. Thanks for all of the helpful information.
 
I would recommend that you use the most precise shooting ammunition in either rifle ...... as either bullet will work well on hogs in both of your calibers mentioned.

FWIW....... 168gr FED OTM (7.62x51mm) will penetrate an average sized hog anywhere at the distances you will be shooting to, from my experience.
