I just looked at an 1860 Gallagher .54 repro made by Erma of West Germany. It looks like an interesting gun. Does anyone know if the brass is available anywhere? What size bullet do they use?
I've seen pix of the Erma but never handled one. You'll have to buy it and slug the bore. IIRC, Dixie and some of the other suttlers who cater to the reinacting groups will have brass and bullet molds to fit it. I like the Civil War carbines. Post pix if you get it.
Go over to the North-South Skirmish Association BB and ask. IIRC, brass is available, but expensive - around $1 per tube. On the other hand, they're pretty durable.
From what I read, you don't need alot of brass. You pour the powder into the case, then just push the bullet in and load it into the rifle. They use musket caps.
JeorgeS the sling shot guy in non firearms weapons has one....in Germany. You might PM him or give a shout out.
Frankonia and others carried them in the mid 1970'sin Germany and I came close but as a lower enlisted guy I had to store such in the arms room and so get permission to do so and had been told I had too many PoWs as it was already.
I seem to recall at that time they came with some steel cartridge like inserts that I could not imagine giving a good seal. I also understand that a good many origanals had been imported to France for the little Franco Prussian blow up about five years after the ACW. You might check with some French guys here abouts on this board.
I seem to recall that the US Army carbine surveys made during the ACW did not rate them highly but I could be wrong.
An old Dixie catalog I keep near my desk listed them call it ten years ago as part # KA0604. Might plug the numbers in Dixies search engine and see if it come up as the right thing.
From what I've read, it's a good idea to have the repros relined in .50, otherwise they're not very accurate. They are interesting - they break open to take the cartridge but still use a musket cap. One shooter online says that he loads them like a muzzle loader.
Yep, DGW does list them at $7.00 each. I think I'll stick with the ML'ers and Trapdoor.
Thanks for the info. http://www.dixiegunworks.com/product_info.php?products_id=8151
