After getting a haircut, I stopped in to browse at my local gun store. I found a Springfield Armory Garand with nice metal and wood in excellent condition. It has a 1950 dated barrel on it with great rifling and a TE of 1. It looks like it was rebarreled and not shot any to speak of.

The story is it was bought by a guy in an estate sale where the family didn't want it (obviously) and this guy had it for a time and decided he didn't need it and sold it to the gun store. The serial number is 4217***. The price - $650!

I wasn't in the market for a firearm in this price range, but couldn't pass it up. I guessed a Garand in this condition could go for upwards of $1,000. Tell me I did good?!

I'm going to free it from lay-a-way in 2-3 weeks and can't wait to try it out. I've never had the opportunity to shoot a Garand.

Does anyone have a good source for clips?

PaulTX,

Looks like this one has the original barrel as a 4.2 mil SA was most likely built in or around 1950.

$650 is a good price, but not "great" for a nice shooter grade M1. I would not expect to pay $1k for any Springfield Armory M1 unless it was "all correct" and close to being a "collector grade".

Congrats and enjoy....

PaulTX...

In the condition you describe I think $650 is a darn good price. Most likely they could ask even more. As soon as you get it, I would get one of the Garand books that lists all of the component parts and various numbers and do some checking. If the barrel and most major components are "correct", i.e., proper part numbers and mfg for that serial number gun, it is a great buy.

As far as clips, I will give you my secret. Find a local CMP-affiliated club, join, and get involved in the hi-power competition. Most CMP clubs should still have CMP ammunition for sale, in 280 rd ammo boxes, already loaded on en bloc clips. Usually for a good price (no sales tax or shipping charges).

Otherwise look at almost any of the online ammo or shooting goods companies. They usually have them, although at higher prices.

Good luck, it sounds like you have a winner there.

You should consider going to Dick Culver's website,

http://www.jouster.com

They have a LOT of good information on Garands (and other military firearms).

According to their information, your rifle is most likely an early 1952 model. That is the manufacturing dates for the serial number your rifle falls into. That very well maybe the original barrel, but some of the folks on Jouster.com can help you determine that.

Thanks for the input guys! After doing some research and seeing my garand was made in the 50's, I agree the barrel on it is probably the original one - just in very good condition.

I'll be picking up a couple of books to learn more and check out the numbers on this garand. The last time I handled a garand very much was back in high school ROTC. We each had one assigned to us, mainly for drilling purposes.

I have an Inland Carbine and another carbine just about finished built from a new SA receiver and GI parts. This Garand will go great with the rest of the family. If the parts on this Garand match up as original that will be great, but I'm not a collector per se. I can't afford to be a collector, all my guns are for shooting!

Congratulations on a good find. Maybe I need to get my hair cut, too.

Nah, strike that...I like giving folks who don't know me the first impression I'm a tree hugger from my appearance.

Besides, I already have a Garand :D

Mr. Aquaticus,

I see you are in Dallas. I live in Denton and work in Lewisville. Most of the time I shoot at Quail Creek (I-35W & FM 1171) with ocassional trips to Collin County (McKinney) and Alpine (South Fort Worth). Where do you like to shoot?

One of these days I need to find a rifle range that's greater than 100 yards to air out my Swedish Mausers and this new Garand.

Paul....as for clips. If you have access to the mail order catalog Cheaper Than Dirt..they have them.Their web site is www.CheaperThanDirt.com

I shoot sometimes at the Garland public range. I've been meaning to get up to Denton to the range there. When I shoot indoors it's at The Bullet Trap in Plano or over at Bass Pro in Grapevine. Less frequently these days I go to the family farm a couple of hours east where I have an 800 meter range.

Swedes sure are nice, aren't they?

Rabbit.
